Almost every household finds it delightful to keep a dog. After all, dogs, known to be man’s best friends, can be adorable. Individuals living alone or couples without children may find that a dog can be a convenient company in their monotonous lives. As long as the owner keeps to proper pet hygiene measures, having a dog in the house can even offer advantages for stress relief.
The downside of this matter however is when an individual has or develops dog allergies. Humans are generally not allergic to animals, however, there are those who have hypersensitive immune systems that cause them to have allergic reactions to animals. Almost often, the causes of dog allergies are dog dander, saliva or urine.

The most common cause of dog allergies is seen to either be from the dog’s saliva or dander as dogs often urinate outside. By dog dander, it means the dog’s dead skin cells that are regularly shed by the animal. In some cases, the problem may not be dog allergies but pollen allergies as there are times when pollen gets stuck in the dog’s coat.
As with almost all forms of allergies, there are common symptoms that manifest when an individual suffers from dog allergies. They are coughing, sneezing, nasal congestion, stuffy nose, shortness of breath and even a serious asthma attack. At times, dog allergies can also cause headaches, fatigue and skin problems such as rashes or hives.
Dog allergies’ symptoms generally vary from person to person. If an individual, for instance, touches the dog and has contact with their eyes, then it is possible that they will develop itchy or watery eyes. As oftentimes it may be difficult to determine the real cause of an allergy, it is best that an individual initially verifies if the cause of the problem is indeed dog allergies.
This measure can be done by keeping the dog away from the house for a couple or more months. While the dog is away, it may be sensible that the house be properly cleaned- the walls and the floor washed and the carpets steam cleaned. The same should be done with the windows, the door and the furniture covers.
All measures should be taken to make sure that all possible allergens are removed from the house. To find out whether an individual indeed has dog allergies, then it is recommended that they be keen in observing whether allergic symptoms still arise when the dog was away and then when the dog is brought back into the house.
To prevent being susceptible to dog allergies, it is essential that the dog be bathed once or twice a week. This will minimize the dog’s shedding off of dander which is the most common cause of dog allergies. After bathing the dog, it is best that the owner get a bath themselves.
To avoid dog allergies risks, dogs must not be allowed to get over the bed nor to enter bedrooms. An effective preventive measure for dog allergies is to spray anti-allergen powder in all the places where the dog often stays. To ensure that the pet is free from dog diseases which also often cause dog allergies, it is best that the dog be given multivitamins and a fatty acid diet.
Dogs must also be only allowed to sit on furniture and car seats covered with a sheet. Leather seats are often recommended to prevent accumulation of dog dander and do away with dog allergies. And for those with dog allergies and asthma, HEPA room cleaners may be helpful as they are designed to address the needs of sensitive and asthmatic individuals.
