Get Rid Of Dust Mites, Minimize Allergies

Tags: , , ,

2007-11-05When something is small, that doesn’t really mean it’s harmless. Much more so with microscopic dust mites. Dust mites can spell a whole lot of trouble, especially when one develops an allergic reaction to them. Dust mites are closely related to spiders and ticks. What causes them to be a source of allergic reactions? Their feces and the skin they shed.

It sounds as simple as that. But then again, it may not be as simple as it seems as dust mites live in the dust. They are basically microscopic and by all means, one cannot visibly determine what it is they are up against at. Dust mites are common and they may even be present in every household.

But the thing is, they can cause much inconvenience and even tremendous health havoc on some individuals. Specifically individuals who develops a hypersensitivity to them. Dust mites are not directly harmful to humans in that they neither bite nor suck blood. But they shed their skin and produce feces which can be inhaled as dust and in turn cause allergic reactions.

Apparently, measures have to be taken to prevent such from happening, and much more so if someone in the household has a hypersensitivity. In most cases, the best means to treat allergic reactions is to get rid of the source. This is especially true for dust mites. What to do to eliminate them? For one thing, an individual must make their house less hospitable to dust mites so as not to encourage their production.

For starters, one can reduce the humidity in their home. With 50% less humidity in their home, one can experience a greatly reduced dust mite population in the household. Having a clean house is also important in controlling dust mites. It may be wise to invest in professional upholstery and carpet cleaning, much more so if pets are kept in the house.

Dust mites love to feed on pet dander, thus, keeping a pet in the house can be conducive for dust mite production. It will be helpful for dust mite control if the floors, the drapery and the upholstery are regularly vacuumed. Existing dust mites can also be eradicated by changing the beddings once a week and washing them with hot water.

And while the sheets are in the laundry, the mattress should be cleaned and vacuumed thoroughly. Dust mites love to inhabit in beddings as they feed on human dead skin cells as well. And dead skin cells abound in beddings. A high quality air filter can also aid in the endeavor of getting rid of dust mites.

It can catch the microscopic mites as well as the dust they create. On the other hand, washable air filters should not be used as they harbor the growth of mites instead. The more severe one’s hypersensitivity is, the more drastic the measures are needed to be carried out. One of them may be finding another place for a furry pet to live in.

After all, it is almost impossible to completely eliminate dust mites when a furry pet lives in the house. Other than that, controlling dust mites may also mean using latex covers in the mattresses, or special hypoallergenic pillows and short pile carpets. It is also wise to ensure that the furniture is not the overstuffed variety as dust mites are more apt to live and reproduce in them.
