It’s Often Not So Easy With A Wheat Allergy

Tags: , , ,

An estimated 40% of the total population is suffering from sensitivity to wheat or some of its components such as gluten. Simply put, they have wheat allergy and living with such a condition can be challenging if not frustrating as wheat has always been a staple in the diet. Most of those who suffer from wheat allergy developed the condition during childhood and in some cases, wheat allergy subsides during adulthood.

There are, however, few unlucky individuals who have to contend with wheat allergy all throughout their lives. Living with such a condition not only has to do with preventing and combating its physical manifestations by avoiding wheat and wheat by-products, but with the psychological imprints it can leave on the individual as well.

Once deprived of something, it is only an inherent mechanism to crave for them, and this, individuals with wheat allergy have to struggle against. When a person suffers from wheat allergy, it means that allergic reactions manifest when there is consumption, ingestion or contact with wheat or its by-products. It may be like walking on thin ice as wheat allergens and irritants basically present themselves everywhere.

Wheat is found in cereals, baked goods, pancake and waffle mixes, chocolate, cookies, pies, processed and breaded meats, pasta, casseroles, some salad dressings, soups and alcoholic beverages. The list is virtually endless. Wheat allergy can manifest itself in the form or baker’s asthma as well when wheat is inhaled. 42% of bakers who constantly work with and inhale wheat develop wheat allergy in the form of baker’s asthma.

Symptoms on the skin such as hives, eczema and itchiness usually become apparent in minutes to hours when wheat allergy develops. Wheat allergy indications may involve the gastrointestinal tract as well thus diarrhea, abdominal cramping, nausea and vomiting may arise. The respiratory tract can be affected by the condition as asthma-like symptoms may also occur.

In severe allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis or an anaphylactic shock, allergy may even cause death once medical help is not immediately sought. A cross contamination with gluten cereals like rye, barley and oats often cause the developments of wheat allergy. It is primarily essential that avoidance of wheat abundant foods and products be avoided to do away with wheat allergy.

Without exposure and contact to the allergen, a sensitive individual usually steers clear of allergic reactions. However, there may be times when determining or diagnosing the cause of the allergy may require thorough measures. For some, diagnosis of allergy may be uncomplicated as the symptoms become apparent once they have ingested wheat or wheat by-products, but in some cases, it may be difficult to pinpoint the real cause of the allergy especially when the one is exposed to the irritant on a regular basis.

Skin prick tests or blood tests are usually helpful in diagnosing wheat allergy and once confirmed, an individual usually has to adhere to a restricted diet especially if the wheat allergy is severe. If the wheat allergy is mild, however, all it may entail is a limited intake of foods and products containing wheat.
