As the society all the more becomes stricken with all sorts of ailments and diseases, the medical field has introduced different approaches to address them. Now then comes the term Holistic Alternative Medicine which is all the more becoming a by-word especially in the internet. Holistic alternative medicine may seem like a new and unfamiliar term to some but its techniques have been age-old approaches mostly in the Orient.
Holistic alternative medicine then has not been currently introduced but the fitting word is “re-introduced”. In the past few decades, the majority may have gotten used to traditional or conventional medicine. By this term, it means the medical techniques made popular by the western world and are relatively new in human history compared to the Chinese healing arts 5000 years ago, some of which are included in holistic alternative medicine.

Conventional medicine is scientific-based in nature wherein one must present proofs and such proof must be evident in laboratory findings. The concept behind conventional medicine is that the cause of a disease is something physical, like a virus or a bacterium and in order to be cured, a patient must resort to prescription drugs and if necessary, surgery.
Conventional medicine is basically a quick-fix approach. You go to the doctor, you pop and pill and then you go home. Then you are cured. The holistic alternative medicine approach is quite different. The philosophy behind holistic alternative medicine is that an individual becomes ill when emotional, psychological or spiritual stresses overwhelm and weaken the immune system and holistic alternative medicine aims to heal a person by finding the cause of the stress, helping the person cope with that stress and aid the patient in supporting the body’s natural healing process through proper nutrition, herbal supplementation and other non-invasive techniques.
A holistic alternative medicine treatment always aims to boost the body’s natural ability to heal itself. In holistic alternative medicine, the patient is empowered to take responsibility for their own health and treatment as opposed to conventional medicine wherein the patient is rendered helpless. To achieve holistic health which is a state of body, mind and spirit well-being, there must be a commitment to the healing process.
The holistic alternative medicine practitioner forms a partnership with the patient and together they develop the best treatment plan. In a holistic alternative medicine approach, the patient and the practitioner continuously strive towards optimal health and not just the absence of sickness. Being an approach to health and healing that emphasizes the interrelation between the mind, body and spirit, holistic alternative medicine treats the body as a whole with each aspect working in tandem with the others.
There are those who refer to holistic alternative medicine as “alternative medicine” being an alternative to conventional medicine but the term “alternative” usually applies to various techniques used in holistic alternative medicine such as massage therapy, acupuncture and medical herbalism. Doctors of conventional medicine often consider the alternative techniques they use such as massage or physical therapy as complementary to the drug and surgical methods they constantly use.
As of date, there has been compelling evidence obtained on the effectiveness of holistic alternative medicine in the treatment of diseases as well as in promoting overall health and well-being.
