Aging is not so much of a misfortune. When one takes time to look and see, it is a privilege. Through the years, you have finally come to terms with yourself. You have come to know who and what you are through your experiences. Adversity has given you the right to establish yourself.
It may not so much be on a grand scale like being rich or famous. But character-wise, you have a solid sense of who you are. True, the years might have stripped off your rosy cheeks and supple skin. Your youthful strength and energy may have diminished. But you have gained a treasure in return.

And that is yourself and your dignity. If you take time to revel in these, then you are aging gracefully. You can now lean back and say to yourself “I’ve had the best of life”. It doesn’t mean at all that all you had were good times. But instead, life had given you the best of wisdom, knowledge and learning.
Most often, these are learned when times had been challenging. You now come to the point when you also say “I am a survivor”. You stand strong knowing that you’ve weathered the storms of living. Your children now have the utmost respect for you. They value all that you’ve done for them.
The effort, and perhaps the sacrifices. You cherish your most prized achievement- having raised your children the right way. As your life is now near completion, you revel in the thought that you have begot children who in turn begot their children. But more than giving them existence, you gave them life and you have molded them.
The sons and daughters that you have perfected with the help of time and experience. It’s not at all to say that you merely gave them comfort and the finer things in life. It’s because that you played a crucial role in their beings. You may not have had the perfect life, but you’ve chosen to accept and learn.
That is aging gracefully. And eventually you let go- you realize that you might no longer be as attractive. And yet your beauty has become more of the essence. It has become more substantial. That’s strength of character and spirit. The beauty of the soul which matters the most. Aging gracefully is accepting the inevitability of death yet cherishing the best of life.
You begin to appreciate all that you have- your partner, your family, yourself. You begin to see the folly of youth and you smile. You’ve been there once and you know- everything has a time of its own. Birth, growth, learning, perfection. You simply let life be as you’ve had the best of it.
And now here you are- gray hair, wrinkled skin and weaker knees. But with this picture of you, you can stand proud. You carry within you life, learning and wisdom. This is aging gracefully- you come to so many realizations and you choose to accept and acknowledge. Choose to age gracefully and you will not so much be disturbed by old age or death.
And in the end, you can only say that living had been worthwhile and you can smile and let be.
