Back Surgery And Its Uncertainties

Tags: , , ,

Back pain has long been a common complaint in households, the workplace and in doctor’s offices. Back pain which is acute lasts from days to weeks, while chronic back pain is more severe. It has a longer duration which can last for years and can be debilitating. At times, the nature and causes of back pain can be vague.

As the condition can degenerate when neglected, there are those who resort to back surgery. Back surgery is often taken as the last recourse for back, disc and spinal problems. After all, a back surgery or any surgery for that matter can be risky. A surgery is generally an invasive procedure.

Possible complications can arise during the process. Such complications can result during the surgery itself or when employing anesthesia. And so it is with back surgery. The surgery may have its benefits, but the risks are considerable, too. When is back surgery necessitated? When is the procedure most effective and appropriate and for what condition? Apparently, back surgery is a recourse taken to address back problems and neurological conditions.

A simple back surgery can greatly improve the condition of back pain patients. But the odds of a back surgery being successful are often dependent on certain factors. A major consideration is the severity of the patient’s back pain. Entailed for the surgery’s success is also an accurate diagnosis of the back problem.

The same can be said with the patient’s physical and health condition – whether this would propitious for the surgery or not. A major factor to take into account is also the doctor’s expertise in performing the surgery. If all these conditions are auspicious, then the back surgery is more likely to bode well.

But back surgery has high chances of being precarious as well. Statistics have shown that for every 1000 patients undergoing the surgery 14 of those aged 65 and above are more likely to die in 30 days. Owing to this, back pain specialists often discourage patients 70 years old and above from undergoing the surgery.

In such cases, the risks of back surgery can outweigh the benefits. In some cases, the surgery has a high rate of success. Like in cases of patients with a herniated disc. And when the condition manifests an obvious protrusion or free floating fragment that impinges a nearby nerve. For less clear cut cases, though, back surgery can be risky.

Such as when the cause of the back problem is obscure. Or when pain is predominant all throughout the back area. In these cases, back surgery may not be helpful. In fact, it can even aggravate the patient’s condition. Other than back problems, back surgery may be required for patients suffering from pain which sears into the leg or arm.

Back surgery may also be necessary to prevent permanent paralysis. This is especially true for those experiencing neurological symptoms. Such symptoms can be loss of bowel or bladder control. The surgery can also ward off nerve damage for those with foot drop. Back surgery can be risky, but when done properly and accurately, it can be a godsend solution which can spare one from distressing pain.
