Back pain can come to the point of being agonizing. And yes, it can be debilitating. After all, there is chronic back pain, and yes it is chronic. It can even last for years. Back pain is common as much as it is painful. It has been estimated that 7 million Americans suffer from chronic back pain.
Eighty percent of the American population on the other hand is afflicted with lower back pain. This is quite a large percentage, especially in lower back pain cases. There are many known causes of lower back pain. Physical causes that is. It can be fatigue or poor posture. Sitting in one position for long hours.

Lifting something improperly. Or injury. These are just to mention a few. It might be interesting to note that lower back pain has emotional and mental causes, too. After all, mental and emotional states are related to the physical condition. When the mind and the emotions are ill, often times, the physical body will be, too.
The mind, the emotions, the spiritual aspect and the physical state are all intertwined. This is applicable to lower back pain as well. Lower back pain is associated with the lower back or the lumbar region. This are of the body is otherwise known as the L1 to the L5.
Lower back pain has mental and emotional causes. This has been a fact and it has been documented. Beginning through the ages of ancient Chinese medicine, this concept has been established. Based on the book “You Can Heal Your Body” by Louise Hay, the following are the mental and emotional causes of lower back pain.
Among these are also metaphysical ways on dealing with these root causes. If lower back pain originates from the L-1, then it means a crying for love. It can be an indication that one is lonely. By all means, the root cause can be insecurity. If the back pain comes from the L-2 region, it can be that one is stuck in childhood pain.
They see no way out of this. Pain in the L-3 of the lumbar area means sexual abuse. One may be feeling guilt or self-hatred. Lower back pain which has to do with the L-4 may have something to do with rejection of one’s sexuality. It can also mean financial insecurity or fear of one’s career.
It can also be traced to feelings of powerlessness. As for lower back pain associated with the L-5, the root cause may also be insecurity. One may have difficulty in communicating. There may be unexpressed anger. Or even the inability to accept pleasure. Lower back pain can also arise from the sacrum.
When this happens, it may mean loss of power or harboring some old stubborn anger. If the back pain comes from the coccyx, then it can indicate being out of balance with oneself. Holding on to something or blaming oneself. This can also mean sitting on an old pain. For all these mental and emotional causes of lower back pain, healing is essential.
Adopting a better perspective and letting go of negative feelings and energy being harbored. A mind, body and spirit healing is needed to deal with a physical and non-physical “dis-ease”. So it is with back pain and its root causes.
