At some points, most individuals suffer from stiff neck. In fact, the ailment itself sounds all too common. Often, the perceived cause of stiff neck is poor posture, stress or injury, and in most cases they indeed are. Occasionally, everybody suffers from stiff neck as it can be a manifestation of stress when tension develops in the neck and shoulder muscles.
Staying too long in one position can bring about such a discomfort as well. A discomfort it is to most, but there are cases wherein stiff neck is a dilemma that one has to contend with daily. In such cases, stiff neck may have come to the point of being distressing.

The initial recourse for stiff neck in cases wherein it is caused by muscular tension is pain relievers. Pain relievers do provide relief, but often they may just be masking the symptoms and is not to be resorted to for long term treatment. There are those who relieve muscle tension stiff neck with a self-administered massage or massage employed by a massage therapist, but in the same manner, the relief delivered is temporary.
Much more so, with an improperly applied massage, the pain can only be aggravated. Upon a medical practitioner’s or an expert’s recommendation, one may also take the recourse of neck exercises. Neck exercises as a measure to address stiff neck has quite been popular. The conventional view that stiff neck is due to a muscle weakness or imbalance gives way to the principle of applying neck exercises.
Neck exercises are known to correct such muscular weakness and imbalance as asserted by the conventional notion. In the same case as taking pain relievers and applying massage, neck exercises do not however attempt to address the cause of stiff neck. Owing to this, neck exercises have limitations as a treatment measure.
Apparently, what seems to be an effective approach to treatment of stiff neck is one which deals with the cause of the condition. This appears to apply the most to long term and chronic sufferers of stiff neck. Such an effective approach, by all means, can be in the form of re-education.
A re-education of the basics on how it is to go about with properly executed posturing and movements. As stiff neck is perceived to be a manifestation of a muscle imbalance or weakness, then the culprit behind it must be poor habits. These poor habits can develop while compensating for an injury by holding the neck in the least painful position.
One may also have grown accustomed to long periods of sitting in a desk and the common stress response of holding tension in the neck and shoulders which lead to chronic stiff neck. As with the case of all other habits, these tendencies may feel right and when they are carried out along with exercises, the condition may all the more become severe.
But when there is a re-education on the basics of movement, the patient can relearn how the body can be poised again to gradually diminish stiff neck and then finally do away with it.
