Tags: , , ,

The discomfort brought about by back pain can either be acute or chronic. By acute back pain, it means that which lasts from days to weeks. Chronic back pain, on the other hand is more severe, as the name suggests, and manifests on a longer duration of months to years or even all throughout one’s life.

Chronic back pain can even come to the point of being debilitating. Back pain can manifest in the different areas of the back. It can be a lower back pain which is the more common sort or upper back pain which may not be so prevalent but can be as excruciating as well.

That pinching, annoying sensation which is upper back pain can beset basically anybody regardless of age or gender. In fact, upper back pain can get on anybody’s nerves without them having to do anything. Merely standing up or getting out of the bed with a wrong twist can cause upper back pain to occur.

Sometimes the ailment which is one of the most common complaints in households and in the doctor’s office may not merely be annoying but infuriating, especially if it is capable of limiting an individual’s normal goings-about. More often, upper back pain is caused by a muscle strain or what is called a spasm.

An individual may have over-exerted themselves causing the muscles to tighten. Once the muscles tighten, they are apt to become inflamed and swell, thus upper back pain occurs. Stress, regardless of its nature can be a contributing factor to upper back pain as well. Stress generally causes the muscles to tighten, thus being caught up in the distress of anxiety and tension can be further aggravated by upper back pain.

An injury, such as a car accident can also cause a blow that can inflame the muscles, and such is another attribution to upper back pain. In severe cases, muscle swelling and inflammation may not the mere cause of upper back pain. At times, pain and discomfort in the upper back can be associated with a herniated or ruptured disc.

One may not be aware that there is a chronic instigator of their upper back pain such as a ruptured or herniated disc, yet they are only beset by one of its symptoms which is upper back pain. When the cause of upper back pain is muscle strain or spasm, hot or cold compresses may be helpful for its relief.

Oftentimes, individuals resort to medications as well such as pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs. When stress is the underlying cause of upper back pain, relaxation techniques may help, such as massage therapy or aromatherapy. This can ease the strain on the muscles and help alleviate the stress and individual is fraught with.

In some cases, the doctor would recommend certain exercises to relieve upper back pain. But this measure must be taken with caution as not any exercise will do. In fact, improper exercise can aggravate back pain. When upper back pain is an indication of a ruptured or herniated disc, this may necessitate surgery as minor pain relief measures for back pain will not suffice.

Oftentimes, upper back pain is a minor discomfort that goes away with rest, a bit of stretching or with the aid of pain relievers. It is best, though, that an individual take preventive measures for back pain such as keeping to a proper posture when carrying out normal activities. A proper perspective when it comes to facing stress may also be helpful.

Upper back pain can potentially become chronic when neglected and aggravated, thus to prevent this potentially distressing condition from besetting an individual, care and caution must be taken into account.
