A career as a dental hygienist is one which offers remarkable benefits, job security, vacation time and insurance. For those who are more inclined on working with people while having the security of a stable career and be exposed to a variety of experiences, the path of being a dental hygienist may be one of the most sensible choices.

Regardless of race, gender or ethnic background, anybody can potentially be a dental hygienist. Prior to being a dental hygienist, required of an individual is a high school diploma and at least two years of college education, one that provides clinical instruction combined with classroom lectures. Orthodontic and dental offices, school districts and county health departments are some of the possible environment in which a dental hygienist can be employed.





A dental hygienist is one of the most essential members of the dental team as they provide hands-on dental care for both children and adults. Other than that, the dental hygienist also educates and shows patients on proper means of caring for the gums and teeth. Explaining approved methods of flossing and brushing as well as other oral care procedures performed in the home is also within the job description of the dental hygienist.

There is variety amid the routine of each day in the career of the dental hygienist as another opportunity to provide service presents itself with each new patient. As the service they render is deemed as necessary and valuable, dental hygienists can gain personal satisfaction being able to work with individuals of all ages and from all walks of life.

In providing patient dental care, dental hygienists work closely with dentists. Within their training includes skills like taking and developing x-rays as well as cleaning patients’ teeth. Such professionals also remove patients’ dental plaque build up. Other than instructing patients on proper diet and nutritional measures which ensure optimum oral care, hygienists also apply sealants and fluoride treatment.

More so, hygienists are trained on making teeth casts for patients in preparation for other dental procedures. Such dental procedures may include brace applications and dental bridge and denture fitting. In most cases, the dental hygienist is the first and last person that the patient consults with all throughout the dental visit.

If needed, the dental hygienist takes the patient’s medical or dental history and answers patient inquiries. It is the dental hygienist’s duty to make sure that the dentist is aware as to why the patient is sitting in the dentist’s chair in the first place.
