You can have dental implants installed to restore the form and function of your teeth. How do dental implants work? In the case of your existing teeth, the roots generally hold them in place. When tooth loss happens, though, an implant can be used to replace the lost root. An artificial replacement for the root can then be secured.

What exactly is a dental implant? It is generally composed of a metal screw, which is thread into the jawbone. This allows for the attachment of various prosthetic dental replacements. When it comes to materials, implants are often made of medical grade titanium or titanium alloy. Titanium is the material often used due to its compatibility with the human biology.

Procedures of such kind are performed by tens of thousands every year. Dental implants have in fact come a long way. There have been evidences which indicated that the procedure has been performed for thousands of years. Take the case of the Egyptian mummies. They have been discovered to have gold wire implants attached to their jawbones.

The same can be said with pre-Columbian skeletal remains. They were shown to have semi-precious stones installed in their jaw bones. The procedure had also been existence in Europe for centuries. Roman soldiers were actually found to have had them. Remains have also been unearthed from the middle ages in the Middle East exhibiting evidences of ivory dental implants.

As for the modern application of the procedure, it was established in the United States. It started as early as the beginning of the 20th century. It however grew in popularity during the 1980’s. During those times came the introduction of the titanium cylinder. Modern usage of dental implants is for various replacement situations.

For instance, they can be used to replace a single tooth. As a result, there would be no need to grind down and alter adjacent teeth. They can also be used for mouths which are entirely toothless. In this sense, they are used to support replacement teeth. With such a procedure, you can provide stability for a complete set of denture teeth.

They can be useful as anchors to support a fixed bridge. As such, there would be no bothersome and unsightly moving and clicking which often go with dentures. All these and more are the benefits of having dental implants. Having such implements can greatly aid you in cosmetic and functional aspects.
