Agonize With A Root Canal, Or Agonize Endlessly

Tags: , , ,

You might have heard about the root canal, and often what you hear are the ghastly rumors about it. When somebody says “you need a root canal”, chances are, you might shudder. This procedure has a notorious reputation for being painful. The root canal procedure falls under the scope of endodontics.

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry concerned with diseases associated with the pulp of the tooth. The pulp is a core component of the tooth. It is also found in the canals located within the root of the tooth. The pulp is the essential structure which keeps the teeth healthy.

Within it are blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues. Once a tooth begins to grow, the pulp is that which is first to appear in the gums. And when it reaches maturity, the pulp is that again which is removed. As much as a root canal may sound like a complex procedure, it is actually the most commonly performed by dentists.

Those who share the agony of decayed teeth are most likely to undergo this treatment. When the pulp is infected or in any way damaged, a root canal may have to be employed. If dental caries or a cavity had been neglected and worsens over time, infection may develop, and the pulp could primarily be affected.

Once there is decaying, the tooth’s dentin and enamel begin to wear away. Until such time when the corrosion reaches the root canal. Under this condition, the pulp becomes susceptible to bacterial infection. Normally, this would cause pain, and people often resort to taking antibiotics for treatment. However, infection taking place within the tooth will not be addressed.

When this condition remains, the infection is likely to be aggravated until there is inflammation. As a result, blood supply in the tooth is diminished. And this causes the excruciation of a tooth decay. These are among the mechanics of a pulp infection which may require a root canal. Then there is pulp damage, another dental condition often necessitating the same procedure.

If the damage happens to be irreparable in any way, the dentist more often applies the said treatment. Some people may have had the same tooth having been filled or restored too many times. This sort of damage might lead to the need for a root canal therapy. A pulp could also become injured due to other dental procedures, one of which is the application of a crown.

How will you know you are in need of a root canal treatment? The dentist would most likely determine through your symptoms and their intensity. One is pain experienced when biting, pushing or touching the teeth. Another is the teeth’s sensitivity to heat or cold which lasts for more than a few seconds.

Then when the teeth is broken or discolored and inflammation becomes visible. Thorough testing and diagnosis is usually performed by the dentist, the professional solely authorized to perform a root canal procedure. Pain is most often experienced after the procedure, and conventional or alternative remedies may be helpful to alleviate it.

You can ask your doctor about the most suitable means for you to ease the pain of a root canal treatment. And when significant discomfort persists after a few days, it is best that you see your doctor again.
