But the question remains- do teeth whitening toothpastes work? How effective really are such products? Before making assumptions on the subject, certain things have to be initially clarified. For one thing, the cause of teeth discoloration has to be first determined. This has much to say on the efficacy of teeth whitening toothpastes.

There are several known causes of teeth discoloration. Primarily, discolored teeth can be due to stains on the surface of the teeth. Another cause of teeth discoloration comes from the dentin inside the teeth. So where do teeth whitening toothpastes come in pertaining to this? Teeth whitening toothpastes, they whiten the teeth through their abrasive components.
These abrasives work by physically removing the stain on the surface of the teeth. Such stains can be caused by food and other elements. Whitening toothpastes, they sort of scratch these stains off and then polish the teeth. Abrasive components of teeth whitening toothpastes have to be strong, but not too strong.
The abrasion of these teeth whitening products must be strong enough to remove the stains. But then again, it must also not be too harsh so as to cause damage to the teeth enamel. If a teeth whitening product is too abrasive, it can lead to teeth sensitivity which is yet another problem.
If a teeth whitening toothpaste is too harsh, it can reduce its whitening property. Other than whitening the teeth, it can aggravate the teeth discoloration. A harsh teeth whitening product can cause the thinning of the enamel. This can make the yellowing dentin within the teeth more apparent. As such, the teeth would only appear more discolored.
In a sense, manufacturers are right when they say their whitening toothpaste is effective. But further clarifications have to be made when it comes to this. Whitening toothpastes, they work for teeth which are discolored merely on the surface. Stains of such nature can possibly be removed. On the other hand, a yellowing dentin will not be remedied by such products.
In fact, when the whitening toothpaste is too abrasive, it can aggravate this condition of teeth discoloration. Harsh whitening toothpastes for the teeth can damage the surface of the teeth. And when the dentin from inside is discolored, this would be exposed. In this case then, it would be best to use whitening toothpastes containing abrasives on a safe level.
Or else, one can also use whitening toothpastes which does not contain abrasives at all. This said, much information can be gained out of the effectiveness of whitening products. One should not hastily brush off anything from the shelf and apply it on to themselves. In finding an effective solution to a dilemma, it always pays to be initially informed and aware.
So it is with whitening products.
