Mental illnesses generally beset those affected with an excruciating confusion which binds them and apparently robs them of the liberty of rational and sound thinking. When one puts the issue of mental illness upfront, an anticipated notion is that those suffering from it are in a state of disarrayed thought processes or a disoriented concoction of emotions and psychological issues which appear on the surface as mere insanity.
One such mental illness wherein a patient’s symptoms can range from high to low, from euphoria to dejection and from incapacitation to listlessness is bipolar disorder. Otherwise known as manic depression or manic-depressive illness, bipolar disorder is evidently debilitating. Bipolar disorder is of four categories which are Bipolar I, Bipolar II, Cyclothymic disorder and Bipolar disorder which is not otherwise specified.

This segregation of the classifications of the disorder is on account of the different manifestations of symptoms in different individuals. Once the doctor is able to determine which category of bipolar disorder affects a patient, it is then that they can tailor treatment measures which will suit the patient’s needs.
The condition generally has an initial onset during adolescence or early adulthood and may continue to besiege an individual all throughout their life. The causes of the disorder remains elusive and to date, conventional medicine has not established a cure. Both men and women can be fraught with the predicament of bipolar disorder.
In most cases, the symptoms initially develop during the early twenties but researches have indicated that onslaughts of the first episodes of the disorder can occur earlier, such as during the teenage years. In fact, as early as childhood, one can display symptoms of bipolar disorder. Such symptoms of the disorder can persist for weeks or months causing considerable disturbance and even distress in the lives of those affected as well as those within their immediate surroundings such as friends and family.
Through medications and therapy, bipolar disorder can be controlled and managed, but when neglected and left untreated, the disorder can be aggravated causing further havoc. In 80 to 90 percent of all cases of bipolar disorder, a family history of depression was indicated. Those experiencing an onset of the symptoms of bipolar disorder are often oblivious of how impaired they are and of the severity of the damage instigated by the disorder on their lives and those of others around them.
Such is why it is essential for friends, family and primary care physicians to be keen in observing and in recognizing the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder after which it is only necessary for them to urge the individual affected to seek professional help. If a family member or friend exhibits symptoms of bipolar disorder, it is only expedient that they are encouraged to seek the care of a psychiatrist or a competent therapist so as to put a rein on bipolar disorder and to enable the individual to enjoy the privilege of a balanced and sound mind, well being and a better quality of life.
