Giving Depressed Teens Serious Attention

Tags: , , ,

You’ve been a teenager once and you know how rocky it can be. There are healthy teenagers, yes, but often there seems to be so many issues to deal with during the teenage years. For one thing, peer pressure is very compelling during this stage. What others, especially other teens, would say is very crucial.

Teenagers just take it to heart. And so some of them may suppress who they really are and keep up with what others expect of them instead. And then a troubling issue arises- loss of identity or identity crisis. The world is basically like a jungle for teenagers and they can be at a loss.

Primarily about who they are and how to cope or who to turn to. That’s why the phenomenon called teenage depression is so common. There are 4 depressed teens out of 100 teenagers. That statistics is rather alarming when you come to think of it. In fact, there are more depressed teens everyday- the number keeps on growing.

Some of the common symptoms to look for in depressed teens are failing grades and alcohol or drug abuse. It is especially alarming if the teen practices inappropriate sexual behavior. Depression is a deadly disease, much more so when it affects a teenager. A teenager’s thoughts, feelings and behavior will be affected by it, and in a negative way.

Their overall health may suffer as well. If teen depression goes untreated, it would only get worse. And all the more will it be harder to treat. So if you suspect that your teenage child, relative or friend is suffering from depression, it’s important that you help them seek help or treatment.

Depressed teens who are left untreated could be prone to do suicide attempts. Depression can cause a person to be suicidal. Take it seriously when you see a depressed teen and then they have suicidal remarks. Such remarks are not to be brushed aside because they might have the tendency to indeed make an attempt.

Some depressed teens might also exhibit suicidal tendencies, and again, this has to be given serious concern. Depressed teens like these need somebody to listen and reach out to them. Other than being a friend or listening ear to these teens, you can also encourage them to seek professional help or counseling.

Depressed teens may suffer from different forms of depression. First, there is major depression, dysthmia or reactive depression. In this sort, one would experience extreme feelings of sadness. Then there’s manic depression where there are bouts of elation and sadness in a cyclical manner. Different forms of treatment can be given to depressed teens.

Primarily there’s counseling wherein the depressed teen is helped by talking through their feelings. In supporting them to be able to sort out their issues and understand themselves. Medication may also be an option for some, especially in severe cases wherein the teen is overwhelmed by the condition. Conventional and alternative treatments are available for depression and the pros and cons of both are better weighed to determine which would be suited.

With the most suitable treatment for depression, depressed teens could begin to feel better and learn to cope with the stresses and pressures of being a teenager.
