Anybody can be prone to depression. Teen or adult or elderly, men or women. Men and women can be possible victims of depression. But statistics show that there are lesser cases of depression in men. There are lesser men who have been diagnosed and treated for depression. Could it be that men are less susceptible in suffering from the disease? That may not necessarily be so. For one thing, a large percentage of depressed men might not have sought help. Many are well aware of some manly nature which are different from women. For one thing, men are competitive. They would rather not show their weaknesses to other people. They have to appear strong and able all the time.

And depression, to show that they are emotionally weak, is not a pleasant idea. And for another thing, they would rather keep their emotions to themselves. So more often, those they work or live with or interact with are not aware of what’s going on inside them, and it could be depression. This makes depression in men tricky. When this disease strikes among this gender, it can drive them towards drug and alcohol use. Harmful substances may be their recourse for an outlet of their dilemma. And that yet can lead to another problem, or an aggravation of the problem. Men may rather turn to drugs and alcohol when they are depressed rather than admit that they are feeling down.
But symptoms of depression in men may eventually surface, and friends and family should be keen about them. For one thing, one may have low energy level. Or perhaps he would have some difficulty when concentrating. A man may feel anxious, worthless and unhappy, among others. Weight loss may also be a symptom, or loss of interest in sex. On the other hand, there are those who experience otherwise. They may begin to gain weight and become indulgent in sexual activities. A man may then become unusually quiet and unable to discuss matters. They might complain about vague physical problems and would become more irritable. The tendency of turning to drugs and alcohol to “cope” is undoubtedly disastrous. In the long run, this can lead to poor performance at work and unacceptable behavior. Men with marital problems are more prone to depression. And their destructive way of coping would in turn aggravate the problem. One of the best means for treatment is psychotherapy. A man would be taught and encouraged into facing the problem and dealing with his issues. More so, he would be able to express himself and in a healthy manner at that. Other than this, a man can also try to engage in worthwhile activities to keep him preoccupied. So is eating well and resorting to relaxation techniques. Reading and gaining information about depression can also give insights, and this can help in so many ways. Depression in men is in some respects different from that in women. This can be due to the distinct characteristics of both genders. Nevertheless, the disease can come to the point of being deadly, and it is only essential that it is addressed accordingly.
