Depression In Men And How To Deal With It

Tags: , , ,

Men may not so much be expressive of their emotions. They are those often expected to be strong and responsible, and for them, there is the pressure to keep up. So when depression in men strikes, those concerned may keep it to themselves. Yes, men can suffer from depression as much as women can.

But the thing with depression in men is that sufferers are less likely to seek help. But the sad thing is, depressed men are four times more likely to commit suicide than women. This goes to say that depression in men is a real problem. It should be given much attention in the same manner as other diseases and conditions.

Suffice it to say that depression is much like diabetes, or heart disease and cancer which should be given the proper due. After all, depression could be deadly. Depression mainly affects a person’s emotions and thought processes, and this is not at all to be neglected. Depressed men often turn to drugs and alcohol, too, thus, they become destructive.

Not only to themselves, but to their jobs and the people they live and relate with. If the condition is left untreated, it can cause so much havoc. It can lead to financial problems, divorce and broken relationships, and yes, suicide. With proper treatment and diagnosis, however, there are excellent chances for recovery.

More than 6 million men in America suffer from symptoms of depression today. The condition is less common in men than in women, but nevertheless, it is as deadly. The exact cause of the condition is yet unknown. However, new brain imaging techniques have provided some insights. It has been supposed that the disease may have been caused by a disruption in the communication between the brain’s neural circuits and chemical neurotransmitters.

People may be genetically predisposed to it as well. Genetics can affect a man’s risk of acquiring depression. For most men, though, environmental, genetic and emotional factors can be the triggers. A man may be put at greater risk when certain circumstances happen. Like for instance, a divorce, a sudden job loss or bereavement.

The same could be said when a man is beset by certain illnesses, like Parkinson’s Disease or HIV. For men who cannot imagine taking illicit drugs and alcohol for depression, there is a much better option. And that is seeking professional help for their condition. There are medications which are safe and effective for a vast majority of sufferers.

In fact, it is possible to manage the disease without prescription medications. This entails the care and attention of a medical professional. Alternative therapies are equally effective as well. Some of them are meditation, exercise and SAM-e. For those who are at risk and may think that they are suffering from symptoms, a visit to a health professional is necessary.

That way, proper diagnosis could be obtained, and appropriate treatment would be employed. A natural stress, anxiety and depression formula could also be helpful.
