Loneliness. Such an unkind word which so many people would rather not know. But the fact is, loneliness is real. It besets anybody, and everybody. When a person feels lonely, he feels isolated. It may be isolation in a physical sense, or otherwise- emotionally or psychologically. A person physically alone and not in the company of others may feel lonely.
After all, to be human is to be social. It is an inherent human need to feel a sense of connection to others. Or simply to belong, and furthermore be acknowledged. But a person can be alone without feeling lonely. When so, such a person has a constant companion - himself.

Learning to befriend oneself takes an arduous process to attain. Just as one would befriend another person by getting to know them, so must a person too himself. But oftentimes, it may seem more straightforward to know another person than it is oneself. It takes much discernment to be able to know who or what a person truly is to himself.
Along the way of knowing himself, a person may come upon disheartening truths about it. Such may cause him to be in a state of denial, or otherwise be resentful- towards himself. When one feels resentful towards himself and cannot admit the reality of what they are, alienation can take place.
And alienation leads to loneliness. The world can be such an impersonal place. Where a person can be left to fend for himself in discouraging circumstances. Such circumstances will only be aggravated if a person feels alienated. Alienation from others can be overwhelming in itself. But the struggle of being alienated from oneself is perhaps a more grueling battle.
An internal battle wherein a person is left to vie against none other but himself. In such a battle, who wins and who loses? If one overcomes himself, what a glorious victory it is. But if one has been defeated in such a crusade, then it will be the defeat of the person himself.
Of the” person” within him. How can one be able to vie against outward realities when within himself he feels incapacitated? To be able to endure trying circumstances, a person must know himself. In knowing himself, he must embrace it. And in embracing it, he must fortify it. From then, all else will follow.
Alienation will be overcome, and so will loneliness. A person’s worst adversary is himself- if he makes it so. But if one considers himself his utmost ally, then it will be a constant one. To keep him company in times of loneliness and desolation, and even in defeat. Victory is sweetest after defeat.
When one has struggled through defeat with himself on the way to victory, it can only be glorious. The most trying battle is not that which the world gives, but of the person against himself. All else begins with the self. What one is as a person- how he thinks and perceives himself- will pave the way towards victory or defeat.
