The Battle With Major Depressive Disorder

Tags: , , ,

Major depressive disorder may sound a bit too technical. But the fact is, major depressive disorder is an all too common disease which can be an excruciating one. Emotionally, that is. In simple terms, major depressive disorder is called depression, and when you say depression, doesn’t it connote an unpleasant, painful state which you hope you won’t ever experience? The fact, however is that major depressive disorder affects millions of people all over the world and it is a very real disease.

Sure you may have blue moods once in a while which can be a natural response to a trauma or a tragic experience. Depression is in fact inherent to the human make-up, and it may even be necessary for emotional growth and maturity. But when depression gets out of hand and turns into a medical condition, you may be beset with a personal struggle which can be so debilitating and binding.

Others may disregard the idea of a major depressive disorder and tell you to muster all your courage and senses and just plainly snap out of it. They may think that the disorder is simply in your head and tell you to snap out of it. They are well not aware that major depressive disorder can brutally hold you under its grip and will basically drain all the life and energy out of you.

Major depressive disorder may well be considered as a monster which painfully enervates your emotional and mental aspects, and oftentimes, the struggle with it requires the help of a competent professional, peer or family support and medications or procedures if necessary. What really is the nature of major depressive disorder? To date and medically speaking, major depressive disorder is known to be the result of an imbalance in brain chemicals.

The medical community regards major depressive disorder as a disease and is primarily treated with medications. Along with medications, however, doctors generally employ psychotherapy which can be effective treatment measures. There are cases wherein one has to contend with major depressive disorder all throughout their lives. In such cases, careful monitoring may be necessitated to minimize and if possible eliminate reoccurrences of major depressive disorder.

Paramount to dealing with major depressive disorder is healthy coping skills with stressors and compliance with the doctor’s instructions. Irritability, hampered reasoning and slowed down physical reactions are some of the symptoms of major depressive disorder. Other than that, an individual may also lose interest or enthusiasm in things and activities which they used to enjoy.

Pessimism, fits of rage and anger as well as decreased sexual interest go with major depressive disorder. In cases of mild depression, the symptoms may only come out as mere annoyance, but when the condition turns severe, suicidal thoughts and even attempts may be instigated. Signs to look out for whether a friend or family member or even oneself may be suffering from major depressive disorder is when they begin to have mood swings, waning interest and eventually sulks and withdraws.
