The Roller Coaster Ride Of Manic Depression

Tags: , , ,

It can be indeed akin to a roller coaster ride- the highs and lows of manic depression. Manic depression is a fairly common mental disorder affecting around 5.7 million Americans. Manic depression is a condition in which a person becomes manic or depressed, as the name suggests. Bouts of mania and depression in manic depression or bipolar disorder vary.

This is of course depending on the case and nature of the manic depression. It can be frightening- the mood swings of manic depression. It can leave one confused and disoriented having to deal with a variety of emotions which are on the extremes. One can get muddled and lost with the disoriented mix of symptoms of manic depression.

When a person is in a state of mania, they become elated, or euphoric. They may begin to rant with very rapid speech. Their thoughts and ideas would also come in racing. In the manic phase of manic depression, one may become so restless. This would cause them to be impatient and irritable.

Their energy levels become so high that they may be unable to sleep. Undoubtedly, sleep patterns are affected by manic depression. During the state of elation, one may also have grandiose delusions about themselves. They may think that they are stately, with much riches and influence. Along with these may come hallucinations.

They are associated with the symptoms of manic depression. As for the depressive phase, it is the opposite. When one is in a depressive state, the symptoms of depression would be present. One may have extreme feelings of sadness. They may also begin to isolate themselves and lose enthusiasm with things they used to enjoy.

Loss of appetite may also be present, or otherwise one would be eating much. They would also be either sleeping too much or too little. In contrast to the manic phase, one who is depressive feels that they are worthless and inferior. They may also feel that they are penniless.

They may even come to the point of being suicidal. Such is why manic depression is a potentially dangerous mood disorder. When the symptoms get out of hand, bipolar disorder can drive one not only to madness, but in taking away their life. It has been stated that there is yet no known cure for bipolar disorder, but treatments are available.

There are medications such as mood stabilizers and tranquilizers which can alleviate the symptoms. It has also been regarded that bipolar disorder is a condition that one has to live with for a lifetime. But in the field of medicine and when it comes to conditions and diseases, one must be open to possibilities- both positive and negative.

There is always hope for those with bipolar disorder to live a better quality of life. It is not the end of the road when one has a mood disorder. Help is available for those who seek it, and it can make a difference. It takes the initiative of the person concerned as well as those around them- their friends, family and concerned agencies.

Everybody is entitled to hope, even those with bipolar disorder.
