Dealing With The Dilemma Of Mood Disorders

Tags: , , ,

Throughout the centuries, the shrouded misunderstanding of mental illness has put those beset with the condition in an exigent predicament. In the earlier times, the mentally ill were thought to be possessed with malign spirits and were often subject to inhumane acts of punishment and isolation. The evolution of human awareness, however, has shed some light on the nature and complexity of the human mind, and so came the advent of a better and humane understanding of mental illness.

There are basically countless classifications of mental illness ranging from mood disorders to extreme psychosis. In some cases, such as mood disorders, an individual can be functional despite being beset by the condition. There are those who are depressed yet are able to go about with their daily functioning. In most cases, though, it remains questionable whether they live quality lives as depression can strip an individual of their zest and enthusiasm for life which basically means that even though they may get on with life, they do so being hovered by a gloomy and muddled perspective.

Mood disorders are a fairly common mental illness which a significant proportion of individuals may be suffering from. Statistics often find it difficult to obtain an exact number as to the cases of mood disorders as a sizeable percentage of cases are often undiagnosed. By far, science has considered several factors contributing to mood disorders.

They can either be a reaction to traumas or life-changing events, a chemical imbalance in the brain or a genetic predisposition. Studies have shown that mood disorders often run in families, thus the possibility of the disorder being acquired through heredity is considerable. Drug or alcohol abuse which is capable of altering the workings of the brain can also contribute to mood disorders.

Mood disorders are generally classified as bipolar and unipolar. By bipolar disorder, it means an individual is suffering from extreme moods of mania and depression. Unipolar mood disorder or depression, on the other hand can be broken down into four other sub-categories: major depression, dysthymia, seasonal affective disorder and postpartum depression.

There are general manifestations that characterize mood disorders. They can be feelings of sadness, despair, guilt, irritability, constant fatigue, loss of appetite and suicidal thoughts. Symptoms of mood disorders generally vary from person to person, and often, those beset by the condition suffer from different combination of these manifestations. Depression may beset every individual from time to time due to events or circumstances which serve as precursors, but in most cases, this healthy depression goes away in due time.

However, depression being one of the mood disorders, can go to the point of being debilitating as it can become a perennial burden to an individual. It is certainly unreasonable to go about with living in such a stance, therefore it is only necessary that mood disorders be addressed accordingly by seeking professional help.

Conventional treatment for mood disorders generally includes therapy and anti-depressant medications. Or an individual can also opt for alternative healing practices for mood disorders which do not entail the use of pharmaceutical drugs but in instigating the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Regardless of whichever option an individual takes, what is essential is that mood disorders are dealt with and that one is able to enjoy well being and a better quality of life.
