Postpartum Depression And Mom’s Baby Blues

Tags: , , ,

A mother most likely anticipates having her baby as a moment of joy. It offers her the experience of giving and nurturing a new life. Having her baby in her arms can bring a profound mix of emotions. Happiness can be one of them, but so is sadness. Pregnancy and giving birth bring about major changes to a woman on all levels.

Physically, emotionally, mentally and physiologically. These changes can instigate the onset of postpartum depression. Many may think that having a baby is all about being happy. But in a realistic point of view, parenthood is a huge responsibility. The coming of a baby can also bring about so many uncertainties and even anxieties.

These can be aggravated by the hormonal alterations within a woman’s body. And so postpartum depression can possibly set in. With all the mix of changes and adjustments that a mother has to go through, it may not be surprising when signs and symptoms of postpartum depression creep in. Postpartum depression is quite a common illness.

It affects a great number of women. Most often though, women have learned to cope with postpartum depression and successfully treat it. Postpartum depression is actually a lot like depression. The only difference is that postpartum depression besets new mothers. New mothers often experience “baby blues” and it is different from postpartum depression.

What differs between the two is the length of time a woman suffers from the symptoms. In most cases, common signs of postpartum depression are like that of depression. One of them is suffering from anxiety. Women with the condition may often feel anxious. This can further be aggravated by feelings of sadness, guilt, irritability or restlessness.

A mother may also begin to have problems or difficulties when sleeping. Social activities or things that used to interest her may no longer have an appeal. It is then that she becomes apathetic or may lack the sense of feeling any emotions. Or else she may feel resentment and anger.

Or perhaps she would feel fear of motherhood, her partner or her child. Postpartum depression can also make her suffer from uncontrollable or unexplained weeping. She may also have trouble concentrating or focusing. Changes in eating habits may also manifest with postpartum depression. A mother may begin to eat more or less than what she used to.

As for the physical symptoms, a woman may experience chest pains pr headaches for no reason. Once these signs and symptoms of postpartum depression are noticed, it is best that help is sought. Especially if such manifestations have affected the woman’s well-being for an extended period of time. A mother has so much to look forward to with the coming of her baby.

Being so, she and her family have to take the recourse of seeking help when postpartum depression sets in. The best measure by far is getting help from a proper medical authority. Postpartum depression is prevalent among women. But professional help is best sought for a woman to cope with and treat it.

It is then that she can fully appreciate the joys of motherhood and can take on with her responsibilities as a parent.
