It can be tough parenting a teenager. The teenage years are basically those which can be tumultuous. It can be a stage when you would seem not to know your child anymore. A lot of changes generally go with being a teenager. Changes in every sense. Emotionally, physically, psychologically- name it.
The fact is, parents may not be only those who are puzzled with their teenager. Even teenagers themselves can be puzzled about what’s going on in themselves. Teenagers face a lot of perils then as they can be vulnerable. Teen depression is among these perils. Teenagers are in fact susceptible to teen depression as they may face so many issues.

 Issues about themselves, their families, their peers, their relationships and even their academic performance. Transitions are oftentimes difficult, and the teenage years can be just that as it is also a transition. Imagine how it is when a child is being thrown into the world of adults. It may not be so sudden, but still, the change can be overwhelming.
With all the responsibilities and expectations of them, a teenager may have a difficult time coping. And so teen depression may set in. There are two forms of teen depression. Teen depression may just be an episode, like a reaction to a failure or disappointment. Teen depression of this sort may happen say after a break up.
It can be tough facing this sort of teen depression. But in due time, a healthy teenager may be able to get over it. And then there is the scary teen depression which lasts for more than it should be. By this, it means perennial teen depression which is not healthy depression at all.
This teen depression is already an illness. And being an illness as it is, it needs medical attention. Teenagers with this sort of depression may become helpless. This is where you are parents come in- to recognize the signs of teen depression and to render your teenager help. What exactly are the signs of teen depression? It may be depression when your teenager loses enthusiasm from the things and activities they used to enjoy.
Your teenager may also start to eat very little or even not eat at all. It is also a sign of depression when your teenager does not sleep well. They may be able to sleep though but still wake up in the morning feeling tired. Or your teen may start to withdraw socially from friends and family.
This is certainly unusual as teenagers are generally very social. They need constant interaction. So if your teen starts to sulk and becomes a loner, be keen. They may be suffering from teen depression. The “blues” or being down in the dumps happen to everybody, teenagers and adults alike. But be wary when your teenager becomes sad for a long time.
It may already be clinical teen depression. Teen depression is not to be taken lightly. It will affect your teenager’s quality of life in so man y ways. Serious teen depression is more likely to lead to other problems. Depressed teens may begin to take drugs or alcohol. They may then perform poorly in school and their grades would suffer.
When your teen is depressed, they may retreat so much so into themselves that they may become ill or harm themselves. Take action as a parent then when you suspect that your teenager suffers from teen depression. Make it your business- that’s what parenting a teen is all about.
