Treatments For Depression And A Better Life

Tags: , , ,

Several theories abound pertaining to the real cause of depression. Depression in itself is an inherent aspect of the human emotional make-up, but when this condition of personal dejection becomes morbid and gets out of hand, depression becomes a possibly deadly illness to contend with which would then require the individual concerned to take a recourse for treatments for depression.

Treatments for depression vary according to the medical practitioner’s approach and theories on the case of the patient. Treatments for depression may include sorting out an individual’s emotional muddle and entanglement through psychotherapy or psychodynamics or they may be with the use of pharmaceutical drugs. There are extreme measures of treatments for depression as well such as through electric convulsive therapy (ECT) also known as shock therapy.

As much as there are drastic and harsh treatments for depression, there are gentle and anodyne ones too, such as with the use of herbal remedies. Such treatments for depression can be used solely on their own or in conjunction with one another. Clinical depression is often a disoriented mix of psychologically intertwined issues and when a therapist believes so, they may use the approach for depression using psychotherapy and psychodynamics.

Psychotherapy as one of the modalities of treatments for depression is based on the premise that depression stems from irrational thinking about oneself. Psychotherapy is otherwise known as talk therapy and counseling and crucial to its effectiveness is consistent sessions with a skilled and competent professional. Psychotherapeutic treatments for depression are measures which can be employed to resolve depression on all levels, ranging from the mild to the severe case.

Psychodynamics on the other hand is a form of psychotherapy in which an individual is guided in resolving internal conflicts as well as those associated with their childhood. Such treatments for depression are based on past experiences and attempting to correct misguided thinking which stems from them. And then there are treatments for depression using pharmaceuticals such as MAOIs, SSRIs and TCA’s.

Such medications alter the production of neurotransmitters in the brain as this approach regards depression as a manifestation of a brain chemical imbalance. Pharmaceuticals as treatments for depression appear to be more costly in the long run and entail the offshoot of side effects. Then there are treatments for depression using electroconvulsive therapy in which an individual is induced to have a seizure.

Through electroconvulsive or shock therapy, it is believed that chemicals in the brain are released and that communication between the nerves is improved. Other treatments employed for chronic cases of depression is vagal nerve stimulation wherein a small pacemaker type of device is put into the chest. The device then would stimulate the nerves which run from the neck to the nerves and would then control depression.

Herbal treatments for depression on the other hand is based on an alternative approach, and they can be equally effective in addressing mild to moderate depression. Other modes of treatments for depression are aerobic exercise, meditation, progressive relaxation and guided imagery. Whichever measure one opts to take, what must be borne in mind is that a better life is possible after depression.
