Coping With Gestational Diabetes

Tags: , , ,

One of the more common health concerns during pregnancy is Gestational diabetes. A temporary medical condition, Gestational diabetes causes pregnant women who are not known to be diabetic appear to be one. Gestational diabetes results to high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. And as quickly as it occurs to someone who is pregnant, Gestational diabetes also disappears as soon as the pregnancy is over.

It is not clear what causes this diabetes. What the medical community know now though is that it is notably directly linked to certain factors that puts one pregnant woman likely to have Gestational diabetes. Primary is if there is a family history of diabetes then Gestational diabetes can be expected.

Second culprit is obesity with pregnancy a potential factor in weight gain. Said diabetes also is likely if previous pregnancies also noted a similar occurrence. In this case, a repeat is in the offing. Another factor for Gestational diabetes incidents are those in women pregnant over 30 years old where a bigger percentage have been established to have been diagnosed with Gestational diabetes.

And lastly, this diabetes is also feared in cases where in previous childbirth, the baby delivered weighed more than 9 pounds. Gestational diabetes though a temporary medical condition has significant risks. An abnormally high level of blood sugar can mean potential harm for the baby and the mother. If left untreated and poorly managed, it potentially can cause permanent diabetes to both mother and child.

This type of diabetes also brings “fat” babies or babies with macrosomia. In this case, fat babies are not cute but rather a concern since certain are health problems such as potential danger during childbirth or difficulty in breathing. As such, treatment and management of Gestational diabetes is pushed at the earliest stage.

Again, earliest intervention here means earliest detection and earliest treatment. Gestational diabetes is best managed with the proper diet and routinary exercise safe during pregnancy. With the medical condition normally away once pregnancy is over, doctors are one in saying that in the course of the diabetes, aggressive intervention must be done.

And it is primarily through the proper diet and exercise. Sugar levels in the blood can be corrected in due time with due intervention in Gestational diabetes. And with this, the mother and child are off to a healthier start. So history in the family, pregnant women over 30 years old, previous incidents of said type of diabetes and bigger babies delivered.

These factors should be noted so as to be fully aware on the risks it poses thereafter. Such alongside corresponding facts that this diabetes no matter what the trigger-factor was can be treated, managed and remedied. It is all about seeking the right medical help and it should start as soon as Gestational diabetes is detected and diagnosed.

Remember, nothing beats early detection for early intervention and early remedy. Make Gestational diabetes as temporary as possible. The mother and the baby can be off to a good start albeit exposed to a bad condition.
