Low Blood Glucose Is Fatal In Diabetics

Tags: , , ,

When you think about diabetes, what would usually come to mind is high blood sugar levels. And you think that the only danger lies when blood glucose levels are high. Well, that’s just one aspect of it. Diabetics have to be especially careful in controlling their blood glucose levels. It has to be in a normal range- not too high, and yes, not too low.

When blood glucose levels are too low, that condition is called “hypoglycemia”, and it is equally fatal as having high levels. Low blood sugar is another term for hypoglycemia. Such a condition may occur suddenly if a person has taken too much medication or may have skipped or delayed a meal.

That’s why diabetics have to be mindful of taking their meals regularly, at the right time. If a person exercises more than usual, hypoglycemia may strike as well. If hypoglycemia is left untreated, a person could have a seizure or pass out. If you suspect that you are suffering from symptoms of hypoglycemia, have your blood tested to be sure.

Otherwise, you’ve got to be keen in looking for the symptoms. Following are the common symptoms of low blood sugar. You may begin to feel pangs of hunger. Your movements might become uncoordinated and you start to feel restless. Emotional instability could be experienced. You might feel confused and lack mental concentration.

Watch out if you begin to have palpitations and sweat heavily. Or a headache which goes with a sinking feeling. Your breathing becomes faster and eventually you could have convulsions. So what do you do when this condition strikes? You can chew glucose tablets as directed or suck hard candies.

Taking 2 or 3 teaspoons of honey or sugar might also help. All these are fast acting sugars and they could help in restoring your blood glucose to a normal range. After doing any of these steps, wait for 15 minutes and test your blood glucose level if you can.

If the level is still too low or if you’re still feeling the symptoms, do any of the steps again. If you’re still not feeling better, it’s best that you seek medical help. Once your blood glucose returns to normal, it’s better that you eat. If it’s less than an hour before your next meal, eating that meal would be better.

If it’s more than an hour till your next meal, then have some snacks. Half a sandwich and a glass of milk would do. If hypoglycemia is a recurring problem for you or if it happens too often, tell your doctor. Your doctor could give a better diagnosis and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Living with diabetes entails that you have to be watchful and careful. You’ve got to make means to live a lifestyle which will not worsen your condition. Ask your doctor for ways which can help you cope with and manage diabetes. There would be limitations and restrictions on your part, and you have to acknowledge this.

A good quality of life is still possible as long as you keep to what the doctor said.
