Tags: , , ,

A healthy and well-functioning mind and body is a gift. It is a necessity as well. For a person to be able to get hold of this gift and necessity, they should learn to appreciate it. One way of expressing this appreciation is to be mindful of yourself and your health.

Your path to health and fitness is trodden primarily by you alone. It is your body and you have complete control over it granting you are capable. The capability of you taking control of your health and yourself is more often a matter of choice. People normally make a living to earn and gain resources.

These resources we use to sustain ourselves- food, clothing and shelter as the basics, indulgences and luxuries on the further end. We make a living to literally and figuratively live. For that, we need a strong and able body. Or else, a disease or illness will strike, depleting not only our resources, but our lives, little by little, if not abrupt.

A strong and able body is the product of being fit and healthy. Entailed of this is to take care of body, mind and spirit wellness, an encompassing state of health. If total health is neglected in one form or another, the body becomes susceptible to illness. For instance, a person does not engage in physical activity or hardly exercises.

Then it is aggravated by a poor diet or eating habits. This condition sets the stage for many kinds of illnesses to set in, especially cardiovascular diseases. A common cardiovascular disease affecting a large number of the general populace is diabetes. Genetic predisposition is a primary factor to diabetes development.

But a major precursor to this degenerating illness is an unhealthy lifestyle. Once diabetes has set in, proper management of the disease is essential for one to cope and be functional. Diabetes is a prevalent disease to date. The health sector along with related agencies has devised various means and measures for diabetes management.

For proper diabetes management, needed is a stepwise approach right from the beginning. Accuracy and measure will prove helpful to set the specifics in reaching a goal. To what extent is the diabetes affectation? This is primarily determined by certain laboratory tests and screenings. A hemoglobin A1c test, for instance, should be undergone at least twice a year.

An annual cholesterol check is required as well. If there happens to be irregularities, checking cholesterol levels should be done more frequently, especially for regulation goals. For a person suffering from type 1 diabetes, checking for the possibility of diabetic nephropathy should be done 5 years after diagnosis. As for type 2 diabetes management, a diabetic nephropathy test is performed upon diagnosis.

Furthermore for diabetes management is annual screening for diabetic retinopathy. Foot structure, protective sensation and skin integrity should also be assessed yearly, through the means of a diabetic foot annual exam. Through these exams and screenings, figures and quantities are determined as guidelines for the extent of diabetes management required.

Diabetes management entails lifestyle changes. It basically means practicing restraint and needing to set limitations. But more than imposing rules on yourself, allow yourself to feel appreciation of yourself and your body. That you need and deserve to be happy and to live a good quality of life. Only then can you willingly and wholeheartedly practice diabetes management as it should be, and on the whole do your best to be healthy and happy.
