The Health Havoc Which Is Diabetes Mellitus

Tags: , , ,

Diabetes has become an epidemic. The disease affects an increasing number of people each day. Diabetes is regarded as a “silent killer”. It may initially have no symptoms but it degenerates and complications would arise. Such time can come when complications become chronic and deadly. Diabetes can put its victims in so much of a distress.

It can get in the way of their normal living. Diabetes mellitus is otherwise known as the “sugar diabetes”. “Diabetes” originated from a Greek word which means “to siphon”. “Mellitus” on the other hand is Latin for “sweet like honey”. In a sense, this is diabetes mellitus. A common symptom of diabetes mellitus is polyurea or excessive urination.

Excessive urination comes out from a diabetic’s body. It may seem as if water is being “siphoned” from the mouth and out of a diabetic. A diabetic’s urine also contains sugar. This is one of the characteristics of diabetes mellitus as it is called. The good news is, diabetes mellitus can be controlled.

This entails careful management of one’s diet and inculcating the habit of exercise. Diabetes mellitus should also be supervised by a health professional. In this manner, proper medications can be employed. With exercise and proper diet management, a diabetic can do away with the fear of the disease getting out of hand.

It must be taken into account that a diabetic’s initiative is imperative in controlling diabetes mellitus. The doctor cannot be solely responsible in this endeavor. What really is diabetes mellitus? The disease is actually a group of disorders. Such disorders are the outcome of insufficient insulin production or the complete lack of insulin.

These conditions in turn lead to abnormally high blood glucose levels. It is then that polyurea can arise along with weight loss and increased thirst. Of the 16 million people in America having diabetes, one third are unaware they have the disease. As for diabetes mellitus, 800,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

Six percent of the total population of the USA has diabetes mellitus. It is projected that by 2025, the rate will increase to 9%. The body is composed of millions of cells. Cells in turn are like machines. They need fuel for proper functioning. Fuel for the cells’ energy comes from fat, proteins and glucose.

Glucose is the main source of fuel for the cells’ energy. This is where the problem with diabetes mellitus comes in. Those with diabetes mellitus are unable to process glucose as a source of energy. Insulin is responsible for the cells’ absorption of glucose. And insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas.

In diabetes mellitus, the pancreas may have insufficient insulin production. Or diabetes mellitus can result as the pancreas’ complete failure in producing insulin. In both cases of diabetes, blood glucose levels increase. This occurs as glucose remains out of the cells. Diabetes mellitus has become more prevalent. Owing to this, more management measures have been devised.

They can either be medications, supplements, exercise programs or diet plans. They are all available for those with diabetes mellitus. But this is to consider that the patient is resolved in battling with the disease.
