Giving An Eye Out For Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Tags: , , ,

Diabetes in itself is a threatening condition. But the fact is, diabetes can come to the point of being deadly. This is especially true when complications arise, one of them the precarious diabetic ketoacidosis. As diabetic complications aggravate the patient’s condition, it is highly possible that fatality can result. Much more so if the complications are neglected and not conscientiously managed.

The same is true with diabetic ketoacidosis. In simple terms, diabetic ketoacidosis is known as hyperglycemia. By this, it means that a diabetic has abnormally high blood sugar levels for an extended period of time. Warding off diabetic ketoacidosis requires being keen before the onset of diabetes in the first place.

This holds true for those with a family history of diabetes. Diabetes is highly acquired through heredity. It is therefore essential for those predisposed to diabetes to have regular physical and laboratory examinations. This is not to mention taking preventive measures as well. By this, it means keeping to a diabetic safe diet and a regular exercise regimen.

In most cases, diabetics develop diabetic ketoacidosis as they unknowingly acquire diabetes mellitus, otherwise known as “sugar diabetes”. For those who are aware that they have diabetes mellitus, it is more likely that they fail to have sufficient insulin supply, thus they experience an onset of diabetic ketoacidosis. For those with type 1 diabetes and who are insulin dependent, regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is required.

Such individuals are put to increased risks of developing diabetic ketoacidosis. Indeed, careful monitoring as a precautionary measure is necessary as much as it may be tedious. After all, it is a better lot than having diabetic ketoacidosis. In general, diabetics are unable to process glucose as needed by the body to produce energy.

To aid their glucose requirements, they need insulin, otherwise, fat in their body would break down to convert into energy. If this state is left to degenerate, it is then that diabetic ketoacidosis may develop. As the diabetic fails to have sufficient insulin intake, their sugar levels will exceed the normal range.

Should this be allowed to happen for a prolonged period of time, the diabetic may become unconscious or fall into a coma. A diabetic should be on the lookout for injury and illnesses such as a chronic infection. Such complications are likely to lead to diabetic ketoacidosis. Rapid breathing, confusion, drowsiness and blurred vision are some of the common symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis.

The same can be said with loss of appetite and vomiting. In chronic cases, diabetic ketoacidosis can lead to cerebral edema. Children and adolescents are more prone to suffer from it. Symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis are often vague. In most cases they are ascertained through physical and laboratory examinations. Patients with diabetic ketoacidosis require immediate treatment.

It generally takes time but early treatment with insulin and other medications can alleviate diabetic ketoacidosis. Through such measures, a diabetic’s blood sugar levels can eventually return to normal. To prevent such nightmare for a diabetic, preventive measures are crucial. This can be carried out through regular check ups and being keen even when trivial symptoms such as a flu develops.
