On Dieting: Skip The Fad, Stick To The Basics

Whereas a voluptuous female physique is aesthetically appealing in medieval paintings, a woman is certainly appreciated and regarded as more attractive in this day and age when the cheek bones, the clavicle and the shoulder bones are accentuated. To keep up with this standard of beauty,a majority of women are determined to be as slim as can be.

What seems more inconceivable is that they expect to be thin in an instant. They would either resort to diet pills or quick-fix exercises, or fad diets. As diet pills have numerous adverse effects and any exercise seems tedious, a large percentage of women turn to fad diets. With the way they have been publicized, fad diets seem tempting as they promise to melt fat like snow off a rooftop when spring sets in.

In our hurried, past-paced modern lifestyle, nobody nowadays seems to have the patience to adhere to a regular exercise regimen and eat healthy at the same time to lose weight. With the influx of high-calorie and cholesterol loaded food products in the market, obesity rate is on the rise and with the skinny and scrawny criterion of beauty that Hollywood celebrities set, more and more women become desperate to come up to what is fashionably attractive and sexy.

Thus, fad diets became popular promising weight loss magic. Fad diets are fashionable till they last with a duration of probably a year or two. As with any fad though, they eventually fade away until other new fad diets would come up seeming to be more appealing and convincing than the other.





Fad diets come in different packages. Often they focus on a single food, such as the “Watermelon Diet”, or the “Hard Boiled Egg Diet”. Then there are fad diets that concentrate on several foods like the South Beach Diet or the Israeli Army Diet which is a classic, simple diet for four days.

On the first day, only apples are eaten, on the second day cheese, on the third day only chicken and on the last day only salad is eaten. Fad diets eradicate certain, and most often basic food groups such as carbohydrates. You may be tempted to believe that these sort of diets are effective since you can actually lose weight, but almost always, fad dieters neglect the fact that fad diets are dangerous and unhealthy.

You can’t stick to them forever. Fad diets usually have a rebound effect as after you go on a fad diet, you are bound to put on more weight. Eventually you become overweight again with having more pounds to lose than you initially had to. Here’s how to find clues about fad diets: They eliminate or severely restrict certain foods or there are specific foods that you must add to your diet; the diet suddenly and hugely becomes popular and it promises remarkable weight loss such as “a pound a day”.

Most often, fad diets are questioned and criticized in newspaper articles. As they are not medically proven, fad diets often pose a detriment to your health. They can be similar to crash dieting wherein your body doesn’t get the essential nutrients to keep it functioning properly and to ward off certain diseases from invading your system.

A better, enjoyable and permanent way to lose weight is to eat a good healthy meal sans the unnecessary junk food. A good and healthy diet is essential for health and vitality. If you want to lose weight fast, it is wise to consult your doctor for a complete check up as there may be medical reasons why you are overweight.

Ask your doctor for a healthy weight loss diet. You need not go with the fad. Stick to what has been proven safe and undamaging.
