The Fame And Antiquity Of The Mediterranean Diet

Tags: , , ,

Many may have thought that the Mediterranean diet is one of the latest craze in diets. As there is a barrage of fad diets that come and go in the recent years, majority many have the idea that the Mediterranean diet has likewise just recently come and will have gone in a few years or so.

But such is not the case as this diet dates back to antiquity during the 4th century B.C. At around this period, those under the Roman Republic and neighboring nation states located within the Mediterranean region subsisted on low fat fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains with the principal ingredient of olive oil when cooked.

International attention has been garnered by the Mediterranean diet as early as the 4th century B.C. with the spread of the diet regimen throughout the regions covered by the Roman Empire. As the Roman rule expanded, so did the implementation of the Mediterranean diet. As a consequence of the fame and coverage of the Roman Empire, people of all nationalities began to adopt the dining practices of those within the Mediterranean region.

Such is the root of the famous Mediterranean diet which is acknowledged by more and more individuals in different parts of the world today. The so-called Mediterranean diet of this day is more or less similar with the diet regimen of those residing within the Mediterranean region centuries ago. The Mediterranean diet since then has been kept to for over two thousand years and has still gained wide acceptance and following to this day.

The Mediterranean diet may well be one of the popular diet schemes of this day as it has its origins from a time when the diet was unadulterated by cholesterol, sugar, sodium, fat and additives as those contained in the deluge of food products in the current market. There is no arguing that the diet of the modern age can be disobliging and unhealthful as evident in the offshoot of threatening medical conditions of this day not only due to obesity but from the harmful substances contained within the food products of today’s market.

In those olden days where people enjoyed longevity and well-being due to their diet regimen such as the Mediterranean diet, why not apply this diet scheme as a measure to obtain the same benefits as well? It was in the 20th century when Mediterranean diet attracted the attention of men and women in different countries.

It was discovered, devised and implemented by an American doctor by the name of Dr. Ancel Keys to his patients in 1945. Although Dr. Keys initially employed Mediterranean diet in the United States, the diet plan caught the interest of nutritionists and medical professionals in other countries as well. Researches in the 20th and 21st centuries obtained findings that Mediterranean diet delivers significant health benefits such as reduced risks for cardiovascular and heart disease, cancer, hypertension and other ailments.

The age -old implemented and proven Mediterranean diet may not easily come and go like the countless fad diets being publicized in the market today. With the growing awareness and concern of more and more people of the impact of their diet on their health and longevity, the dire search for an effective diet regimen may well be found within the package of the Mediterranean diet.
