The Underdiagnosed Celiac Disease

Tags: , , ,

Ours is a disease-stricken society indeed. Before one knows it, the trivial symptoms of gas and diarrhea can already be making them harbour a potentially threatening disease. And one is not easily spared at that as even the staple food of wheat can be the culprit that can bring ill-health.

It can be disheartening to know that food which is supposed to be the nourishment to the body can also be a precursor of a disease. Such is the case of Celiac disease. Celiac disease afflicts 1 out of 133 people in Europe and the USA with a predilection to develop more in women than men.

Caucasians in Canada, Great Britain, USA and Europe are also more prone to be beset by Celiac disease. What is the nature of this disease? Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. By an autoimmune disorder, it means that the body’s immune system turns against itself. The antibodies which serve to fight and ward off foreign elements from the system attacks the body’s own tissues instead.

Celiac disease, also called sprue or Celiac sprue is vastly under diagnosed as 95% of Americans who are afflicted with it are not aware that the disease have struck them. How is Celiac disease instigated? During the onset of the disease, the villis become inflamed being triggered by gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley.

The villis are tiny, fingerlike projections covering the lining of the small intestines and they are responsible for nutrient absorption into the blood stream. The onset of celiac sprue can create an atrophy resulting to nutritional deficits that can degenerate with time. Celiac disease is, in essence, a disease of starvation.

Daily irritations from breakfast toast, lunchtime sandwiches and gluten sources such as soy sauce and beer progressively damage the villi. Anything from a nervous stomach such as stomach aches, gas, diarrhea to migraines, impaired brain function and mental confusion are indications of Celiac disease. Anemia and dark circles under the eyes are also some of its manifestations.

Diagnosis of Celiac disease can be rather vague as those who are afflicted by it cannot ascertain what is it that really ails them as Celiac disease looks like 1,000 other conditions. There are those who have been plagued by sprue for years yet are oblivious of its presence and possible health detriments.

Those who are beset with Celiac disease but do not have an inkling about it tend to apply symptomatic treatments to the condition as they are not certain of it true cause. Blood tests are usually entailed for an established diagnosis of Celiac disease. A positive result for IgA endomysial antibodies is a sure indication that one has contracted the sprue although this process is generally costly.

There are likewise other blood tests such as IgA tissue transglutaminase, IgA and IgG antigliadin antibodies but they can be unreliable. The gold standard is a biopsy of the small intestines conducted by a gastroenterologist who certainly has the expertise to ascertain whether the patient has Celiac disease. Celiac disease is highly treatable by employing a change in diet.

A strict adherence to a non-wheat diet made up of fish, meat, vegetables, fruits, beans, rice, corn and potatoes is essential for the villi irritation and inflammation to subside enabling the patient to restore good health and recover from Celiac disease. Otherwise, anemia, malnutrition and even cancer can ensue once the disease’s symptoms are neglected.
