Coping With Parkinson Disease

Tags: , , ,

What can be more devastating than aging with an incurable disease that virtually leaves the afflicted and those around them seemingly helpless? The inability to cope with that disease. As such, imagine the devastation of over 50,000 Americans and their families who are told of the disease called Parkinson Disease.

Usually those 60 are diagnosed with this, but people can get it before the age of 40. Once you get over the age of about 60, Parkinson Disease will be on the radar of doctors when new symptoms appear that are indicative of the disease. According to one piece of significant research, Parkinson Disease is more prevalent in men than in women.

To date, Parkinson Disease is incurable, affecting the patient’s nervous system where the neuro-transmitters inside the brain start to malfunction. The malfunction causes shaking in the body and limbs that gets progressively more pronounced as time goes by. Non-tremor symptoms of Parkinson Disease include relative immobility of body sections particularly the face which can be seen as a blank look or mask-like lack of expression.

When brain cells deteriorate, one definitive outcome is Parkinson Disease This degenerative disorder is not passed genetically, nor is it contagious. Despite continued research, very little information is known about what causes this condition. Having said all that, this disease has been known to be brought on by severe drug abuse or certain types of head injury.

Strangely, according to research, cigarette smokers appear to have less of a chance of developing Parkinson Disease, which has led experts to believe the probability that nicotine has some protective qualities against the fluctuations caused by Parkinson Disease. In this aspect, smoking has a benefit after all. The latest news is that new treatments for Parkinson Disease are at the leading edge of current studies, with experiments being carried out with stem cells and gene therapy.

The diagnosis of this disease is a distressing time for any patient and anybody close to them. As a progressive condition, patients suffering with the condition have to come to terms with the fact that there is no hope of recovery, but rather a gradual process of loss of movement and co-ordination.

An early diagnosis of Parkinson Disease is vital to the patient being able to keep some independence, and a decent quality of life for a reasonable length of time. Clearly put, Parkinson Disease is a brain disorder marked by slowness, tremors, stiffness and a loss of balance. At risk for developing this disease is just about everyone with the disease not selective and limited to one’s gender and of latest discovery, age.

Parkinson Disease affects 1 out of every 100 people and there does not seem to be any social, ethnic, economic or geographic boundaries either. Signs of Parkinson Disease includes a shuffling walk, small cramped handwriting, muffled speech, depression and stiff facial expressions. There may be no cure as of yet however support groups are highly available and within reach.

Cope with the effects of this disease because for as long as cure is being worked on, there is hope.
