You may have been familiar with the tv show “Boston Legal”. In fact it has been quite popular. In that specific show, there is a recurring character by the name of Jerry Espinson who happens to suffer from a disease called
. I’m not sure about how accurate the portrayal of the character was, but upon doing some extensive research, I did find out that there’s a lot of truth on how Aspergers syndrome was depicted by the character. Of course, the character and the disease may have been slightly sensationalized, but it did shed some light on the nature of Aspergers syndrome.
In case you’re wondering why the disease is called so, Aspergers syndrome was actually named after the doctor, Asperger, who himself suffered from the disease. To obtain more data about the syndrome, Asperger did intensive self-diagnosis and wrote many articles about it. Asperger’s researches started way back in 1944, but it wasn’t until 1992 that the disease was officially named after him- Aspergers syndrome. There are many characteristics associated with Aspergers syndrome which falls under the category of being a developmental disorder. But among such diverse characteristics, there remains to be some which commonly manifest. In most cases, individuals with Aspergers tend to be exclusively preoccupied with a particular area of interest or a specific subject to the extent that they exclude or disregard just about anything else in life.
In some ways, this actuation is similar to those suffering from autism. When beset with
, a person tends to speak in a peculiar manner, or a monotone. They may have trouble understanding sarcasm or play on words as they are more apt to take what others say literally. Those with Aspergers syndrome often perform repetitive activities as well, such as brushing their teeth at the same time and in the same manner everyday, or taking the newspaper in at precisely the same hour and minute each day and looking through the same sections in the same order. One of the biggest problems that people with Aspergers have to deal with is difficulty interacting with others.
Most sufferers of Aspergers syndrome have the tendency to be loners and are often uncomfortable in social settings. By no doubt, dating is difficult for Aspergers syndrome sufferers, and it may come to the point of being impossible for them to find a lifelong partner. Back to the show “Boston Legal”, you may have noticed Espinson’s motions and manner or gesturing or even walking. Those are basically tell-tale signs of somebody suffering from Aspergers. Appearing very stiff and awkward, others may find the movements of a person with Aspergers syndrome strange. Aspergers syndrome is included in a group of disorders known as Autism Spectrum Disorder.
It may be difficult to diagnose a person suffering from Aspergers syndrome as other diseases within this group are characterized by many of the same symptoms. However, when a person is suffering from any of the diseases within the group, it is almost often evident during their early years. A number of treatments are now available for Aspergers syndrome such as social skills training and medication. With proper support, cooperation and competent service, those with
can live normal lives and enjoy healthy interaction with the society.
