Colon cancer can undoubtedly cause harm and damage to the digestive system. The disease remains to be one of the most frightful and can leave its victim wincing in pain. Other than incorrect eating habits and colon diseases, this form of cancer can also be acquired through heredity. One’s genetic make up contribute to the possible acquisition of colon cancer.

People with a family history of the disease are posed at higher risks for its development. Generally though, colon cancer is said to affect older people, especially those aged 50 and above. Most of these data remain inconclusive though. The exact and specific causes of colon cancer are yet to be precisely determined.

More researches are underway to establish accurate data pertaining to it. What are the symptoms of this dreaded cancer? One may experience constipation, diarrhea and abdominal pain. The same can be said with blood spots in the tool or any unusual bowel related activities or uneasiness. When one suffers from these symptoms, it is not conclusive that it is colon cancer, though.

The same symptoms can be manifestations of other normal digestion related problems. In any case however, one should take time telling their doctor all the symptoms that plague them. This could greatly aid in a fast and accurate diagnosis. For a proper diagnosis of colon cancer, the doctor generally employs examinations and tests.

Special kinds of x-ray tests and colonoscopy are undergone to thoroughly diagnose colon cancer. Oftentimes, these tests and exams require empty bowel. The patient should take time to prepare for those. These tests require the insertion of instruments or substances through the anus to the colon. Hence, one should anticipate them to be somewhat painful.

And biopsy, it remains to be one of the effective techniques in the diagnosis of the cancer. Treatment of colon cancer and its effectiveness is greatly determined by the time of detection. As in most cases, early detection and intervention paves the way for a successful treatment. There are various ways of treating colon cancer, and researches are looking for newer and better treatment measures.

To date, however, surgical procedures remain to be one of the prime treatments for colon cancer. The objective of these procedures is to remove cancerous cells from the colon and prevent them from spreading. Application of chemotherapy and radiotherapy are also some of the other measures employed for treatment of colon cancer.
