HSV 1 is known as cold sores which usually affects the mouth, and HSV 2 which is also known as genital herpes. There’s a common question about the herpes simplex virus which goes this way. A person suffers from herpes simplex 1 or cold sores and not from genital herpes.

Would it be possible for that person to transfer the virus to their partner during oral sex? The person has HSV but at that time they are cold sore-free and therefore shows no symptoms. Can their partner be infected nevertheless? The chances may be slim, but the answer to this is YES.
HSV 1 or 2 can infect the mouth and the genitals, even if during contact one partner doesn’t have an outbreak. People think they know about the disease, but for all they know, they could be misinformed, too. For one thing, one should be aware that they will not be able to tell whether a person has herpes simplex by how they look, act or live.

You could be under the notion that intercourse is the only mode of transmission. Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease, but it can be acquired through other means.
Skin to skin contact is one of them, and so is kissing and giving or receiving oral sex. If you happen to touch any infected area of the body, then you could get infected as well. Some people have HSV and may not be aware of it. As a consequence, they could be transmitting it to others unknowingly.
After contracting the virus, symptoms usually show within two to twenty days. It might even take longer than that, especially in women. During this asymptomatic stage, a carrier could still pass on the virus to others. In between outbreaks, the virus can spread, even when the carrier shows no symptoms.
If you happen to touch an outbreak of cold sores, not only your mouth and genital can be infected. Your eyes, fingers and other body parts can, too. If the virus is merely on the surface of your skin, you can wash it off with soap and water. But once you are infected, you are infected for life.
Soap and water will not be able to get rid of the cold sores or the herpes outbreaks. There is no surefire way of protecting yourself from contracting HSV from an infected partner during intimacy. So your best bet would be abstinence. Next to abstinence, recommended is the use of latex condom, but it is not 100% effective.
If you suspect that you or your partner has contracted HSV, see your local healthcare provider. That way, you or your partner could be given proper diagnosis and medical advice. You can never be too careful, so make sure that your partner is one that you can trust. Only then can you enjoy intimacy to the fullest and spare yourself from giving or receiving the gift that keeps on giving.
