The Best Means To Deal With Irritable Bowel Sydrome

Tags: , , ,

One of the most annoying conditions that can beset an individual is irritable bowel syndrome. Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome could be abdominal pain which is generally relieved by bowel movement, changes in the appearance of stool as well as irregularities in the frequency of bowel movement. When such manifestations appear and other serious conditions are ruled out, then an individual is said to be suffering from irritable bowel syndrome.

This discomfort is quite prevalent affecting one in five individuals at some points in their lives. Despite the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome or IBS, however, finding a treatment can be a frustrating endeavor due to the nature of the condition. As symptoms of IBS have the tendency to vary in one person from time to time, a treatment applied may result to the aggravation of another.

Measures for relief and alleviation of irritable bowel syndrome may include herbal remedies and over the counter medications, however, minor complications can arise when these remedies are taken without careful thought and monitoring. Irritable bowel syndrome as a condition can be classified as IBS with diarrhea and IBS with constipation.

By IBS with diarrhea, it means the stool tends to be loose and more frequent whereas IBS with constipation is the contrary – the stool is hard and less frequent. As the condition lasts for over a period of several weeks or months, an individual may experience irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea at one point or irritable bowel syndrome with constipation at another.

Owing to this nature of irritable bowel syndrome, it is generally difficult and complicated to find an effective and suitable treatment for the condition. When IBS is accompanied by constipation, an over the counter remedy may be laxatives, but such medications may lead to diarrhea not to mention that they can be habit forming and become ineffective upon constant use.

As for herbal remedies, aloe can be helpful for irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, but just the same, it could worsen diarrhea. For both diarrhea and constipation accompanying irritable bowel syndrome, a product containing slippery elm may be affective. Slippery elm has had a long history of being a relief for both constipation and diarrhea having been used by native people.

For symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea, over-the-counter medications such as Immodium or Kaopectate are generally included for relief, but researches have found that such may not be helpful for other manifestations of IBS such as bloating and stomach ache. Slippery elm and aloe, however, have anti-inflammatory properties which can alleviate both symptoms.

As for bloating and gas, relief measures may include anti-gas medications, antacids or herbal remedies. All these measures for irritable bowel syndrome, whether OTC medications or herbal remedies may be ineffective on their own as they may only provide temporary relief. To ensure that irritable bowel syndrome is thoroughly addressed, it may necessitate changes in an individual’s dietary habits as well as lifestyle.

A conscientious treatment plan is essential if one is intent on doing away with irritable bowel syndrome symptoms rather than just resorting to temporary relief measures.
