The Real Cost Of Drug Abuse

Tags: , ,

. It’s not just getting a party high. It’s also about despair and deterioration. Even destruction. Not only of oneself, but also of their family. Their job, their health and yes, the society. Drug abuse has long been a frightening social menace. From the decade of the 1960’s to the present, the social predicament of drug abuse has become terrifying. Drug abuse has led to ill health, violence, crimes and even death. Drug abuse not only causes the loss of the drug user’s life, but those of others as well. That’s the real cost of drug abuse- the cost of lives being in despair and going to waste.

That is the monstrous beast called drug abuse. does not only wreak havoc on the addict’s life. But to those of their family, their friends, their neighborhood and the society at large. Abuse and addiction of drugs also cause damage to businesses and government resources. The United States government actually bears the brunt of an economic cost of $180.9 billion for abuse of illicit and prescription drugs. For drug abusers, all that matters is their drug addiction. Thus, they become oblivious of things that matter- themselves and their families. Their jobs and responsibilities. Their role in the society.

Parents who abuse drugs no doubt neglect their children. They also put their children’s health at risk. These parents produce illicit drugs like methamphetamine in their homes. Thus, their children become exposed to the drug’s fumes. This puts their children’s health and lives to a detriment. That is another deadly cost of drug abuse. The lives of innocent people. Drug addiction also has dire consequences on the health of the user. It does not only bring ill health, but death. Drug abusers use drug paraphernalia such as needles to sustain their vice. And this has deadly consequences. They become susceptible to acquiring needle-borne diseases such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis.

These diseases have a devastating widespread affectation. This as over 3.5 million people over the age of 18 have reported that they have injected illicit drugs into their system in their lifetime. The true cost of drug abuse is in fact colossal. Drug abuse can cause employment related injuries and accidents. Employees who abuse drugs are also more apt to pilfer materials, cash and products in order to keep up with their addiction. Drug abuse causes low productivity, absenteeism and even termination. More than that, drug abuse can also lead to employers having to pay higher insurance and medical payouts.

The cost of drug abuse on the society escalates. More so when methamphetamine laboratories are cleaned up by authorities. The cost of this has been estimated to be $18.6 million in a year. The cost of this social menace goes beyond what can be quantified. And this dilemma becomes alarmingly more rampant. Information dissemination on is expedient. The society has to be made aware of the real dangers of the drug addiction vice. Only then can the populace realize the frightening consequences of getting into the mire of drug addiction. They can only then ask if it is really worth it.
