The Truth Prescription Drug Addicts Must Face

Tags: , , ,

Drug addiction comes in all forms. It is not merely exclusive to illegal drug addicts. In fact, drug addiction applies to medications prescribed by the doctor as well. There are as much prescription drug addicts as there are street drug addicts. Prescription drug addiction is constantly on the rise and authorities are concerned.

One may not even know that they are already a prescription drug addict. Whether it is anti-anxiety drugs, pain relievers or sleeping pills, they are capable of being abused. And abuse of them can lead to an addiction. It often takes the hard way for prescription drug addicts to realize that their predicament is not much different than those of illegal drug addicts’.

Prescription drug addicts face the same dependency and struggle as much as illegal drug addicts do. But often, prescription drug addicts stubbornly refuse that they have an addiction. “It’s prescribed by the doctor”, they say. But once an individual uses prescription drugs in a manner against the doctor’s advice, it is already abuse.

For instance, one may just keep on popping pain relievers every now and then when pain arises. Until such time would come when one becomes dependent on them. They would keep on popping the pills to the point that it becomes literally illegal. And so an addiction starts. One may not even realize that they are already a drug addict until problems arise.

It could be that their drug addiction has gotten in the way of their normal living. Or perhaps it has put their health to a detriment. In most cases, it is those people living with drug addicts who notice the problem. Friends and family of prescription drug addicts often urge them to seek help.

They know something is wrong. But prescription drug addicts may deny that they need help. They often do not acknowledge that they have a problem. There are countless cases of such. In fact, statistics pertaining to prescription drug addiction has become alarming. Methadone drug addicts’ number is up by 29%.

Prescription pain reliever addiction on the other hand has risen by 24%. Anti-anxiety (benzodiazepine) drug addicts’ rate has increased by 19%. Drug rehab and detox centers have reported more cases of prescription drug addiction. Cases of prescription drug addicts are in fact much more than those of illegal drug addicts in such centers.

Prescription drugs are as dangerous as illegal drugs. Many of those who have become addicted to them have died. These cases of fatalities are often due to drug side effects and drug interactions. When used unwisely, prescription drugs can be lethal. Such drugs are pharmaceutical products which are made up of harmful chemicals.

As much as they can render treatment, they can also bring about the contrary. Ill health and even death. Prescription drug addicts or illegal drug addicts. There is not much any difference. People belonging to either of the two need professional help. They need to be liberated from the chains of their addiction.

This could spare them their health and their lives. Much more so, drug rehabilitation can make them enjoy a better quality of life. For those who are caught up in the predicament of addiction to prescription or illegal drugs, help is always available. All it takes is for them to acknowledge that they need help and to be resolved to become better.
