Drug Testing To Ensure Safety And Productivity

Tags: , ,

Statistics are on the rise pertaining to drug abuse and addiction. This is especially true among schools and in the workplace. Several factors can be cited as to why an employee resorts to drug use, but the fact remains that drug use can have detrimental consequences. For one thing, it gets in the way of employee productivity. And for another thing, it compromises the safety of the workplace. An effective precautionary and disciplinary measure for such a dilemma can be . Drug testing programs can provide a host of benefits to a company. A drug testing program can be a viable means for an employer to increase the productivity of their employees, reduce the likelihood of jobsite accidents and insurance claims and most of all to maintain a safe working environment.

Prior to organizing drug testing procedures, though, it is best that an employer seeks legal counsel. This would ensure that the company’s scheme does not violate any state or federal laws nor any individual rights. For the drug testing program to be carried out smoothly, a workplace drug testing policy written in black and white is required. Within the details of the policy is when and where the testing will be carried out, who will conduct them and as to what disciplinary actions will be implemented once an employee has been tested positive for drug use. Testing procedures can either be done randomly, as a pre-employment requirement or it can be performed based on suspicion.

Determining which drug testing option to apply will give the employer an idea as to how many kits are needed for supply each year. Different methods and devices can be used for drug testing to detect whether an employee is indeed involved in drug use or is currently under the influence of drugs. Drug testing products are designed both for home use as well as for the workplace. Often times, companies perform an onsite drug testing. In such a procedure, a sample from an employee is tested to determine whether drug use has occurred. Onsite drug testing kits are ideal for the workplace as results can immediately be obtained and disciplinary action can be implemented right on when needed.

For instance, there is urine drug test wherein after taking a sample, results are available in a matter of minutes. The same can be said with a saliva or oral testing. After collecting the donor’s sample, the sample is then placed in a testing device in which the results can be read. Equally convenient is the spray drug test, but it is not as effective as the former two methods mentioned. As for more accurate testing results, there is the hair follicle drug testing. In this form of testing, a few strands of hair are taken as samples. While results need to be obtained from a laboratory through a hair follicle drug testing, the method remains to be one of the most reliable when it comes to testing procedures.

With all these mentioned preliminaries and options for a program, employee productivity and a safe working environment are ensured.
