The Menace Which Is Substance Abuse

As stress is inherent to living, it is a fact that all individuals have to deal with. There are varied ways of contending with stress. They could either be proactive or destructive means and it is well within the individual’s choice which option to take. By proactive means of dealing with stress, it could mean engaging in de-stressing activities such as leisure or exercise, therapy or proper venting of emotions.

There are those individuals, however who deal with stress by aggravating the circumstance such as resorting to certain substances for so- called alleviation of their dilemma. These substances could either be legal or illegal, and when an individual uses them through illicit means, then they are involved in what is termed as substance abuse.

Possible substances which can be possibly associated with substance abuse are prescription medicines such as tranquilizers and sleeping pills, alcohol, nicotine to illegal drugs such as marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine and heroin. Substance abuse has long been a menace to the society as it can be a precursor to crimes, accidents and violence.

A person ensnared in substance abuse can be caught in a personal predicament which can be binding, devastating a debilitating. Addiction or dependency in any form is like struggling to break free from a gripping monster which little by little robs the individual involved of the quality of their lives.





By no doubt, substance addiction is capable of siphoning an individual into an abyss of despair and helplessness. Other than that, an individual’s health is put to a detriment as well making substance abuse a challenging social and personal nemesis to contend with. One of the most prevalent means of substance abuse is the non-prescribed use of prescribed medicines.

As such, an overdose of sleeping pills not prescribed by the doctor is already categorized as substance abuse. Any other way of taking a substance other than prescribed by the doctor is considered as substance abuse. Other than that, alcohol and illegal drugs are also regarded as possible substances for abuse.

Social dilemmas such as alcoholism and drug addiction are possible products of substance abuse as an addiction is often initiated by several tries until the body grows accustomed to the substance and craves for it. Other than stress and psychological or emotional instability, other factors such as peer pressure can also lead to substance abuse.

The menace which is substance abuse can ensnare an individual regardless of age, gender and ethnicity and it almost always entails dire consequences on an individual’s personal, social and legal standing in the society. Much of personal, familial, academic and professional dysfunctionality are instigated by substance abuse making the personal and social battle with this dilemma an arduous one.

If one is entangled in the quandary of substance addiction, it is best that they seek professional help to restore their well-being and a better quality of life. Various private and government sectors for substance dependency rehabilitation can be resorted to for help. With the personal initiative and cooperation of an individual complemented with peer and family support and the supervision of a competent professional or agency, one can be liberated from the chains of substance abuse.
