Food, being the main source of the body’s nourishment, has to be taken with much care are management. If gasoline is to a car, so food is to the body. Such is well a common notion and it is only vital that the body, just like a machine, be nourished with sufficient and good quality fuel to sustain it and keep it in proper working condition.
In the endeavor of making better and healthy choices of foods, nutritionists and health experts have devised the food pyramid as a guide to those who aim to promote their overall health and well-being. Through the food pyramid, individuals are guided on which foods the body needs and the proper portions on how to take them.

The so-called food pyramid, however, has undergone a big change when the United States government implemented updates on its dietary guidelines in 2005. The sector involved deemed it necessary to rethink some principles in the food pyramid so as to adapt with the changing social and dietary setting and as current researches have dictated.
The guiding food pyramid can be resorted to for health and weight maintenance pertaining to food choices and it creates five divisions of foods ranging from bread and cereals, fruits, vegetables, protein and dairy. Into each category, there are different classifications of foods. For instance, within the category of proteins, the food pyramid suggests selections of poultry and meats, eggs, nuts and beans.
In such a food pyramid, there are recommended portions designed for men, women and children. As fats, oils and sweets are needed by the body in small proportions and they contain less vitamins and minerals, if any, they generally do not compose as separate category in the food pyramid. As many have had the notion that the food pyramid was designed under the basis of less accurate research information, the said food guide went through considerable alterations mainly on the selection of foods which are needed for a healthy diet.
Although no changes were made on the portions needed for intake basing on gender and age, some foods were added on each of the categories within the food pyramid. Whole grains were added within the carbohydrates category. As the body has difficulty digesting whole grains, they have been found to be helpful in treatment and prevention of diabetes.
Added in the food pyramid are whole wheat bread, bran and oatmeal as good sources of carbohydrates. In the recent food pyramid, there has also been an addition of good sources of healthy, unsaturated fats such as soy, corn, olive, canola, sunflower and peanut oils. It has been pointed out in the new food pyramid as well that poultry, fish and eggs are better sources of protein rather than animal meats.
The new food pyramid has recommended that butter and red meat be eaten sparingly. In the current food pyramid, it has been recognized that the current diet does not suffice when it comes to vitamin and mineral nourishment, thus the intake of dietary supplements is necessitated to ensure the organs get ample amounts of such nutrients for proper functioning.
