The Fact And Fiction About Female Hair Loss

Tags: , , ,

As the hair is regarded as a woman’s crowning glory, the thinning of the hair, hair loss or balding can be a distressing dilemma for women. Such condition is possible as there are 25 million women in the United States are suffering from female hair loss. Several rumors and myths abound about female hair loss.

There are those who believe that hair loss can be due to frequent washing and shampooing or even the wearing of wigs and hats. Some believe that permanent female hair loss can be caused by cosmetic hair treatments such as perming, coloring and bleaching. Still, others believe that dandruff causes the hair to shed off.

As solutions to these mythical presuppositions, some women frequently brush their hair on a daily basis as they are under the notion that this will make their hair healthier. To have thicker hair growth, there are even those who resort to the idea of shaving their head. As much as these myths may sound credible or absurd, there are established scientific facts about female hair loss.

Female hair loss usually occurs due to hormonal factors. The condition generally occurs among women when there are increased amounts of the hormone DHT or dihydrotestosterone and this more or less happens in the menopausal age. Female hair loss has manifestations of hair thinning around the crown of the scalp as opposed to men who may suffer from complete baldness.

Biological event among females such as puberty and pregnancy also cause female hair loss as they are associated with female hormonal changes as well. During pregnancy, hair loss may only be temporary as it is a reaction to bodily stress undergone during labor. At approximately six months after giving birth, the hair usually restores its normal growth process.

As taking birth control pills affect the hormones, discontinuation of its use can also instigate female hair loss. The most prevalent kind of female hair loss capable of affecting one-third of susceptible women is androgenetic alopecia or female pattern baldness. This type of female hair loss is characterized by hair thinning predominantly over the sides and top of the head.

Female hair loss usually manifests after menopause although it can begin earlier. Among women, dieting and rapid weight loss over a short period of time can result to hair loss. Excessive intake of supplements such as Vitamin A can also cause female hair loss. Stress which can be physical or emotional in nature can also be a precursor to hair loss although not necessarily everyday stress.

What instigates the condition among women is excessive stress brought about by trauma which is of a long duration. Several treatment options are available for female hair loss. A woman can resort to an FDA approved product for female hair loss treatment which has the main component of minoxidil which is a DHT inhibitor.

Another option is natural female hair loss treatments which can be effective as they are made up of hair growth vitamins, herbs and minerals and they are generally safe producing no side effects. Others may address hair loss by using wigs, hair thickeners and hair transplants but they are generally less advisable.

In almost all cases, female hair loss can be avoided, stopped and hair growth can be restored provided that one has the proper information, education and awareness of proper measures to address the condition.
