The Discomfort Of Having An Ear Ache

Tags: , , ,

Ear ache is often more common in children, but it does not spare adults from its discomfort either. Everybody, at some points, is prone to suffer from ear ache. In 2001, statistics have shown that 9.4 million of Americans visited the doctor’s office due to an ear ache. This does not take into account ear ache sufferers and incidents which remained unreported.

The real score behind ear ache? Aside from its prevalence, the condition is also cause by several factors. Options are limited for its treatment, however, so it is best that the onset of ear ache is prevented for one to avoid having to experience its discomfort and possible distress. As for its causes, an ear ache can develop when there is a minor injury in the ear canal or when fluid is trapped in the inner ear.

The condition can also arise when one experiences otitis media, an infection of the middle ear, or otitis externa in which the outer ear canal becomes inflamed. The same can be said with swimming or merely bathing. Even using an all too common cotton swab can cause pain as it can lead to bacterial growth within the ear canal.

This can then lead to the swelling of the Eustachian tube, and under such circumstance, pressure can build up in the ear causing pain and discomfort. A complication from a cold can bring an onset of ear ache as well, although it is not necessarily contagious. Hearing loss, itching and a severe, stabbing pain are some of the symptoms of an ear ache.

Other than that, one may also experience nausea or vomiting, fever, fluid build up behind the ear drum as well as swelling in the ear. Fluid may also drain from the ear and a ringing or buzzing sound from it may also manifest. How does one treat or prevent an ear ache? There is no way to completely keep anyone from getting an ear ache, but there are several measures for its prevention.

For one thing, one must regularly clean their nasal passages to reduce their chances of acquiring the condition. Other than that, one can also practice a constant movement of the jaw like with a chewing gum. This will maintain the proper working of processes in the ear other than inducing an efficient fluid drainage.

A simple and basic preventive measure entails covering the mouth and nose with clean tissue while coughing or sneezing. An ear ache can quite be unpleasant, and as much as a treatment may be hard to find, there are simple yet effective preventive measures which one can resort to. As for its treatment, there are pain killers or ear drops which can help the pain to subside.

Other than that, one can also take antibiotics, especially if the ear ache is due to an infection. When one is resourceful enough, they can also have access to natural and herbal remedies which can be equally effective in the treatment of the condition. At times, all it takes is taking time to be informed and aware to be spared from the unpleasant experience of having an ear ache.
