This is termed as the systolic blood pressure. As for the lower number, it is the pressure as the heart relaxes before the next heart beat. It is known as the diastolic blood pressure. Blood in the body actually travels in a series of spurts and not in an even stream.

Just after a heart beat, pressure peaks in the blood vessels. Pressure then ebbs until the next heart beat. This pressure peaks and ebbs proceeds in a continuous process. No hard facts and figures really represent a normal blood pressure range. However, it has been commonly agreed that somewhere from 110/70 and 125/80 is average for a grown person.

A person with a naturally low reading can come close to somewhere within 100/60. On the high end, a person may have a reading of 140/90.
