The Global Prevalence Of Cardiovascular Disease

Tags: , , ,

In every corner of the world, statistics often show the prevalence of cardiovascular disease being one of the foremost causes of death. Upon mention of the term cardiovascular disease, what may well come into mind is a deadly, silent killer in the form of stroke, coronary heart disease or diabetes.

Indeed, there is a growing concern among the health sector about the widespread dilemma of cardiovascular disease as it takes up more and more lives. To what extent really is the havoc caused by this condition? Studies conducted by the World Health Organization provided statistics concerning cardiovascular disease among three classifications of countries.

Foremost, there is what they call Established Market Economies which include the countries of USA, Japan, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and those in Europe. Then there are countries under the category of former Socialist regions such as China, India and other Asian and island regions, that of African regions south of the Sahara and those countries within the Middle East crescent area.

Owing to this study of WHO pertaining to cardiovascular disease, the prevalence as well as the underlying factors behind it can be determined concerning the condition. There are generally three categories of cardiovascular disease classified as coronary heart disease, diabetes and stroke. According to the statistics obtained, there is a prevalence of cardiovascular disease in the form of coronary heart disease in Established Market Economies.

Among this cluster of countries, there is a distressing 8.2 million individuals suffering from coronary heart disease when the study was conducted. By coronary heart disease, it means a cardiovascular condition associated with angina and manifests in the form of chest pains. As apparent, Established Market Economies are preoccupied in a culture of fast-paced and stressful lifestyle which is why coronary heart disease was seen to be predominant.

India, on the other hand had 6.6 million cases of this cardiovascular disease and the number in former Socialist countries was 5.8 million. As for diabetes, the condition was seen to prevail in Established Market Economies as well with a number of individuals beset with the condition rising to a detrimental 37.9 million.

India had half the number of cases of the cardiovascular disease diabetes: 18.1 million. The sub-Saharan Africa, owing to their rudimentary dietary culture and slow paced lifestyle merely had 3.9 million cases. As for the cardiovascular disease stroke, the study indicated 9.5 million cases in Established Market Economies, China had 7.4 million cases and the sub-Saharan Africa with 1.3 million.

It can be quite contradictory why cardiovascular disease strikes most viciously in countries flourishing with resources and abounding in medical expertise. Why is it that cardiovascular disease is notorious in the nook and crannies of the metropolises rather than the outskirts in the African villages? One can quite come up with an obvious observation.

Regardless of the convenience of technology and the accessibility of knowledge, cardiovascular disease goes hand in hand with a complex, hurried and harried lifestyle and the choice to be negligent about preventive measures despite constant advocacy and awareness.
