The health sector has been constantly advocating against obesity for reasons which are only expedient and apparent. By no doubt, obesity has cosmetic and psychological drawbacks. What is more alarming though are the health risks associated with it such as diabetes, stroke and heart attack. Obesity, in its severe case is capable of inducing sudden death and a shortened life span.
In any way it is perceived, it is necessary that obesity be addressed immediately and accordingly. Several contributing factors are behind obesity, the foremost which are genetic tendencies and dietary and lifestyle habits. Cultural and psychosocial influences on dietary habits is seen to be a major element in obesity as more and more individuals consider fast and junk foods as staple foods.

When an individual is in the habit of eating unhealthy fatty foods, they generally put themselves at risk for a medical condition called high cholesterol. Forty-five million of Americans suffer from high cholesterol each year. Such a trend remains to be alarming as even though a majority of the population is well aware of the risks involved in eating too much fatty and preserved foods, they choose to be oblivious and incautious until it is too late and they are beset with a high cholesterol condition.
It is well within the knowledge of the majority that high cholesterol puts an individual in a greater likelihood for stroke and heart attack. When an individual has high cholesterol levels, there is too much cholesterol and fatty build up within their arteries until they harden. As a consequence, there is restricted blood flow into the heart and heart attack may arise.
An individual is said to be suffering from high cholesterol when too many lipoproteins are contained in the bloodstream. High cholesterol means that an individual has more than the ideal level of total cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol. Such a condition is not to be regarded as negligible, as when high cholesterol progresses, significant health risks are presented.
High cholesterol levels mean that there are heightened amounts of total cholesterol in the body. By total cholesterol, it means the combination of HDL and LDL cholesterols. To prevent the onset of high cholesterol, an individual must ensure that the ideal level for total cholesterol which is 200mg/dL or less must be maintained.
At least 40mg/dL of HDH cholesterol or good cholesterol means that a person is not at risk for high cholesterol. To be considered free from high cholesterol, the LDL or bad cholesterol level on the other hand must be in check at 130mg/dL. Such are the desirable levels of cholesterol to be maintained, otherwise one is considered to be suffering from high cholesterol in which medical attention is required.
Health measures such as avoidance of foods rich in saturated fats and trans-fatty acids is essential in warding off high cholesterol build-up. And as often as it is advocated, it is also necessary that an individual be engaged in a regular exercise regimen so as to promote better blood circulation and eliminate cholesterol accumulation within the arteries.
High cholesterol is a medical condition that is not to be neglected as if it is, the condition generally progresses until one is in a delicate situation of being in danger of suffering from stroke or heart attack.
