Advancements in technology are to be credited in providing a better quality of life to the human populace in general. Technological endeavors are certainly laudable as even the handicapped can somewhat take hold of their abilities and independence with the invention of state- of- the- art implements. Inventions such as hearing aids and the wheel chair have gone a long way in facilitating disabled individuals in using of their remaining faculties.

As much as these inventions may not totally enable to restore the capability of the lost faculties, they are able to help handicapped individuals in mobility and in having improved means of joining the mainstream. The wheel chair certainly has gone a long way since its primitive beginnings in the 1670’s.

It is amazing how such an invention have advanced through the years until it became indispensable as an implement to aid the handicapped. In the past 20 years, there has been a remarkable leap in the development of the wheel chair technology such as suspension and power systems and ultra light frames.

There are generally several choices for a wheel chair to aid the handicapped depending on the individual’s budget and purpose. Wheel chairs are generally of two categories: electric wheel chairs and manual wheel chairs. An electric wheel chair, as the name suggests, is powered by a motor which means that it does not require physical effort to make it move.





An electric wheel chair gives more freedom of movement all in the control of a joystick. Electric wheel chairs can be controlled to move about forward, backwards and even side wards with no muscle power at all. As undeniably obvious, electric wheel chairs are of a higher class and standard.

A manual wheel chair on the other hand is operated with the use of physical effort and muscle and is ideal for those who are on a tight budget. As much as a manual wheel chair may seem less advanced, it, too has its merits. Under this category of wheel chairs and six other types.

First, there is the standard wheel chair which is designed for individuals weighing 300 pounds or less. This equipment can self-propel itself easily or it can have someone push them in it. A standard wheel chair is ideal for a helper or a user who does not have trouble lifting up to 45 pounds.

It can fit in an economized budget as well. The lightweight wheel chair has even more advantages as the name suggests as it merely weighs 10 pounds. Then there is the heavy duty or bariatric wheel chair which has been custom designed for individuals weighing 300 to 1000 pounds. Transport wheel chairs on the other hand are to be used occasionally.

As the name suggests, it is generally carried in to a car and it is lightweight as well. Transport wheel chairs, though need someone to push them as they cannot be self-propelled by hand. Finally, there is the reclining wheel chair which is fitting for an individual who spends long hours on a wheel chair or needs to be constantly put on a prone position.

The drawback with this sort of wheel chair, however, is that it tends to be heavy and difficult to transport.
