“Shiatsu” is a Japanese word which means “finger pressure”. Proponents of the Shiatsu massage and acupuncture believe that physical ailments and diseases stem from blockages or imbalances in the flow of energy through the body. Energy which flows through the body is termed as the “ki”. Through meridians or energy points, the “ki” flows throughout the body.
The goal of Shiatsu is to restore the balance of energy in the body should there be irregularities. Practitioners of Shiatsu strive the balance between the negative energy (Yin) and positive energy (Yang). They seek to determine which area has energy deficiency or energy build-up. Either of these two conditions are said to cause problems.
A Shiatsu therapist applies pressure using almost any part of their body. These body parts can be the arms, legs, elbows, fingers, feet and toes among others. The therapist locates a body point along the body’s meridian which might have problems. He or she applies pressure to these points in order to restore balance to the flow of energy in the said area or areas.
Using the fingers, gentle pressure can be applied on these points, or else forcefully with the point of the elbow. The force of the pressure depends on the severity of the blockage. Stretching, holding or rotating various body parts are also incorporated in the massage. Proper balance of the “ki” brings about physical and spiritual benefit.
Not only does physical comfort and improved health result from balanced energy flow, but also emotional stability and spiritual well-being. It is not uncommon for a recipient of the Shiatsu massage therapy to experience intense emotional response. This reaction is anticipated as energy is released from the problem area. Crying may even take place, and a good Shiatsu massage therapist acknowledges the possibility of it.
