Sports Massage: Integral To An Athlete’s Training

Tags: , , ,

Being an athlete certainly demands much persistence and dedication as such a vocation generally imposes that one should always be on top. Engaging in sports is indeed a highly competitive endeavor, but it does have countless benefits. Other than physical fitness, strength and endurance, sports deeply imbed the values of patience and being strong-willed.

Other than that, the attitude of sportsmanship is inculcated as well. The rigors of training to be an athlete are often those which entail not only effort, energy and mental acuity but planning as well. Other than physical training and developing strategic techniques, there is well one measure which is perceived to be inherent to an athlete’s training: sports massage.

There may well be some similarities between conventional massage therapy and sports massage in that both aim to restore normal functioning subsequent to an injury. But sports massage involves much more than that. In sports, there is no such thing as normal. Being an athlete necessitates that one rises above being “normal” as such is vital in winning.

Such is one of the concerns of sports massage – aiding an athlete to be better rather than being normal. By this, it means boosted physical power and performance. Sports massage comes in when an athlete’s overuse of their body through training creates tissue imbalances and problems. If neglected, such conditions can become chronic, and sports massage may well be helpful in preventing such otherwise they will get in the way of an athlete’s improvement and performance.

Owing to this fact, sports massage has become a vital ingredient to an athlete’s success and top competitors even consider it as an integral part of their training regimen. By sports massage, it means those measures utilized to achieve a specific goal in an athletes training such as massage techniques, hydrotherapy and a range of motion or flexibility protocols as well as strength training principles.

In the application of sports massage, the three basic principles of timing, technique and intent should primarily be considered. Timing is generally associated with whether the sports massage is to be applied for pre or post event, while carrying out a maintenance period or it could be post-injury in which rehabilitation is required.

By technique, it apparently refers to sports massage, stretching or strengthening methods employed by the therapist which are of course for the purpose of achieving the intent or desired outcome. For a pre-event sports massage, the intent is generally to warm up the muscles and to promote better circulation through the muscles.

The post-event intent of sports massage on the other hand is to aid in an athlete’s recovery process by restoring better venous and lymphatic circulation and removing metabolic by-products thereby reducing muscle soreness. As for the intent of maintenance sports massage which is generally done regularly (weekly or forth nightly), it is to keep an athlete’s tissues and muscles in optimum working condition.

Education, skill and experience are therefore required of a therapist for proper application of sports massage.
